Harborside - Mid August

I am thinking of Harborside in Mid August , next summer.. How is the weather? Is it like Orlando - rain every afternoon. Is this peak season or low season due to Hurriance? I think most of kids are still out of school in August 15. Is that correct?
 
That's the very beginning of hurricane season. However, it's much more likely you'll see hurricane activity in September and October. Yes, most kids are still out of school at that time.
 
We were there Aug 15-22. We got a corner of Fay, so hurricanes are possible. Just showers and wind. We had trip insurance and I made sure I brought a hand crank radio/flashlight and peanut butter in case we had a day or 2 without power. So of course we didn't have anything big happen!

It's warm (85) and very sunny. It's not too crowded. The sales people I talked to said it was the end of the season for them. Some schools have already started (in FL, GA, and the Carolinas, especially) so I'm guessing it's not as bad as late July could be. Depending on who you're traveling with it can be a great week. We found that going forward the week will conflict with stuff like fall sport tryouts and band camp, so I don't think we'd go back that week for a while. We also met a bunch of people there on Explorer packages, so they must have had capacity at HRA for those people.

Atlantis had 2 events going on that week that did make parts of the week inconvenient. The Miss Teen USA pageant walled off some areas for photo shoots and such for part of the week. Then a huge German company had a convention there which closed down a number of the restaurants in the marketplace later in the week -- they rented all of Carmines and the steakhouse one night and the other large restaurants another night. To me this implies that the week isn't a big tourist week for the broader facility.

A few questions, since I'm also waiting for the 8 month mark to exchange into HRA in August. Did you have to waitlist for your 8/15 week last year? How long did you wait, what size unit were you able to get. How much does the insurance cost, sounds like it may be good idea considering the hurricance activity this year.
 
If you can wait until the final week of Aug. you will be in the off season and your options will go that much further. We found labour day weekend still to be fairly busy with some waits for the slides but the resort soon emptied and it was very quiet throughout Atlantis and Nassau for the balance of our stay.

We used the insurance from the MyStarCentral site, altho if you Google 'Travel Insurance' you can find a number of companies with various policies and rates. Some offer more coverage for more fees, some do a better job at medical evacuations, etc. Depends on what you need and where you are going.

We had a premium 1BR. We got the week as a comp from Starwood since we're WLR owners and our reserved week there wasn't available since the resort wasn't done. The reservation was made in late March/early April, so 4 1/2 months out, and they clearly had inventory to give away. It was Fri/Fri, so probably easier to do than Sat/Sat (even tho there are more Sat checkin rooms, fewer people seem to want to check in on Fri and Sun so your chance of getting something is higher).

It is good to know that it is not difficult to do an internal trade.
