It's been more years than I care to admit since I had long hair. I've been growing out my very short hair for nearly a year now and it's reached the stage where it makes my neck hot in warm weather (yes, it's still hot where I live), but the sides are still too short to put up.

I can get the back into a pony-tail or claw-clip, but the front side pieces are at least an inch too short.

Someone please tell me what to do with them, before I lose patience and cut off a year's work :annoyed:

My imminent problem is a cruise coming up at the end of this month. I have no idea how I'm going to control my unruly locks in the wind or what I can do with them for formal night

This reveals my age, of course. When the Beatles forced us young men to grow our hair longer I had the problem of the in-betweens. A friend suggested hair spray, and I felt like a fool for not thinking of that. It worked, holding the stuff down where it would look crazy. After a few weeks, it behaved on its own or was long enough to stay where I wanted it.

Besides sprays, there are jells and various kinds of goo.

Headbands! They come in a lot of varieties now and aren't all the melon-crushing horseshoe crap.

I found some nice "bobby pin"-type barrettes that have fake jewels on them that went well with my formal night attire. Nicer than the plastic barettes, small enuf/light enuf to be ok for my very fine hair.

Congrats, by the way!!

If you can, start training the short sides to go behind your ears. You can either gel them or pin them with a cute clip (or even a large bobby pin). I hate gels myself, but I use Its a Ten, the spray styler with the purple top. It is great for styling, especially if your hair ends up with wild pieces overnight and you don't feel like washing it in the morning. It is very low residue, unlike gels, and doesn't make hair stiff. OTOH, hairbanks do keep hair off your neck if you do like that look. I do it sometimes at home, but don't like it for me for when I am out.

Also, you know when you are growing out your hair you should get the ends tipped off every two months or so, right? If you don't you end up with split ends and it grows slower.

Dye it green and spike it like we did at CBGBs and the 100 Club:

I'd plan on hats and visors for the cruise! These at least solve "daytime" problems. Evenings are another matter ... and you'll do your best with a few pins, clips and sprays??

How about a hair weave or a WIG.

A blond wig one night and a sassy red one the next and a jet black the third night and an Afro the 4th night. :D

They ARE showing headbands right now and the little jeweled clips that you can get very inexpensively in the mall at one of those accessory stores (see them all the time but can't remember a name). Don't give up! :cheer:

Don't sweat it. On a cruise, every person is concentrating on their OWN appearance and only the most shallow would be judgmental of someone else's. If anyone is crass enough to say anything, tell 'em "It's growing out after chemo."

Some jeweled barrettes or even bobby pins to hold it behind your ears. Most important, just have a good time, don't obsess over it. You hair won't be even remotely the worst fashion faux pas on formal night.

Think of the men you will certainly see in casual pants and suit jacket.

Thanks everybody. I'm going to the mall this weekend and look for some of the stuff you've recommended.

If it were a little longer, I could just iron it :hysterical:

Jim is right - no one on th ecruise will care. everyone will be in wind. do whatever is most comfortable/easiest/best for task and you in order to make short work of it, so to speak, and get on with the fun!!

Bandanas, too. I used to use them as headbands, the old style was to cover hair while doing chores with a bit of forehead/bangs and hair out the back. there is the style of wearing it on your head as more of a cap but I never got good at that. for an island visit, just tie it around your head however and stick flowers in.

Stop in a Claires in the mall and dollar stores. you can find many attractive
enuf yet cheap options to try and if you don't like it, hurts your head, whatever, who cares if you leave it behind/break it/lose it.
