Can anybody tell me if this resort shows up on Google Earth? If so, can someone post the coordinates. Thanks. :)

Edited to correct the resort name to Grand Caymanian Resort

You can see the satellite photo of Grand Cayman. Look for the golf course on the 7 Mile beach side. It is located in SafeHaven on the sound. I doubt you can see the resort, but having driven by it, the buildings look nice, but it is not the best location.

Thanks Caribbeansun. The coordinates took me right there.

On another note, seeing where this resort is located, is it worth it to keep it listed on our ongoing exchange request or should we drop it? We won't be driving so we'll be taking cabs every where if we go. Thanks.

The resort is a little isolated because of the drive down along the golf course from the main road. We normally have a car. I know the resort shuttles people into town to go shopping etc but I can't really say how convenient that is. The beach at the resort is not really suitable for swimming, too rocky, so you need to go out across the main road to get to 7 mile beach.

On the other hand the resort is very nice. It is small and we found that by the middle of the week we had become friendly with most of the guests. It is the only II 5 star resort on that side of the island. They have a nice pool and bar area, a dive shop on the premises and the staff is very friendly. We thoroughly enjoy our time there and will be returning in December.

I think you'd want to have a car since it is a bit isolated but compared to being right on SMB I don't know that the additional cost of cabs would be prohibitive as far as say restaurants or shopping goes.

My concern would be more with the lack of swimming from the beach which would require a cab to SMB every time you wanted to swim in the ocean or snorkel. That was really the only significant negative that we experienced at the resort (of course we had a car which made it a whole lot easier and cheaper to get around).

Any particular reason you don't want to drive?

From my understanding, driving in the Caymans is on the left and not the right. I've never driven on the left and I'm not about to try it without some practice first in an isolated area. We spent two weeks in Australia and it took us that long to look right instead of left before crossing the street. Besides, I'll be on vacation and I don't want to be bothered by constantly thinking left all the time. :)

The Grand Caymanian is number four out of four resorts on four different islands that we have requested for Christmas 2007. We won't know until Christmas this year where we'll be going (if at all). I'm sure we'll get confirmed in one of the four but we'll have to wait and see into which one.

They do drive on the left in the Cayman Islands. The tags (front and rear), on rental cars are a different color, so the locals can watch out for the tourists.
The local joke is 'you can tell the tourists by watching the windshield wipers going on a car on a sunny day'. However, some cars do have the steering wheel on the left and some have it on the right.
They also have roundabouts, instead if red lights at some intersections. like Europe and Mexico.
Just take it easy until you get it down pat.

GCR doesn't pick you up at the airport, but there are cabs and services that will do that. We rented a car and the first foray from the airport to the resort was a little challenging -- esp. the roundabouts, but really, it's pretty quick to pick up the driving bit. One reason I went to GC was to practice driving on "other" side of the road, to prepare for a trip to England. But, my daughter did most of the driving. They are very tolerant of tourist drivers, and while 7-mile beach drive seems like a constant traffic jam, people will stop and let you in.

We really enjoyed our stay at GCR, but it was our first timeshare, so it might not meet some expectations. It does not have its own "real" beach, altho they were talking about bringing in some sand. The unit was lovely, well-stocked, and it was really easy to get around the resort. We only ate in their restaurant a couple of times -- mostly fixed things in the room. We didn't find it a problem to drive to the beach, because we enjoyed going to the different small coves and smaller beaches, which we liked better than 7-mile (Cemetery, Smith's, Eden, Rum Point, etc. -- not many fish close in at 7-mile, but there are in the coves).

The resort bus goes to the grocery store (that's all it does on check-in day), and to the beach (at least one, maybe two places), and maybe into G-town(?).

Their stingray excursion is the first (or maybe some days the second) boat to get to Stingray City, because it's closer -- that was really great.

There are several places to go to around the island, so it's really nice to have a car (as expensive as a lot of the stuff there is, esp liquor, car rental seems a bargain). The car rental counter is not obvious -- you have to walk out from the airport building, hang a right and wander a ways and go across a street to find the building (you can take a luggage cart -- they were free in March, 06, and there were some over there to use to get back with when we came back).

So, keep it on your list, and if that's where you end up -- enjoy it for what it is (but if you're used to grander TS's, expect it to be somewhat different).
