If the Federal Gov't shuts down there will be no TSA agents and no one at FAA guiding aircraft (if they aren't sleeping on the job).

Always something to worry about. We'd planned on flying to Denver in Aug for a week in the high country to cool off. 103 in Texas.

Flying isn't fun and exciting any more. Just a pain in the lemu (pardon my Hawaiian)

Most of the time when the government announces a shut down, its for 'non-essential' workers, those guys filling pot holes...they may cut hours or people for the FAA and TSA agents, but you're never going to be able to walk through an airport without being harassed by the TSA....atleast, not in our lifetimes

The issue with FAA is going to happen faster than with any other governmental agency. The agency's authorization expires at midnight either tonight or next Friday, I don't remember which.

Despite the fact that they are "essential," they are not authorized to be an agency once their authorization expires.

Hope no one is trying to fly.

Everything Old Is New Again.

When I had a U.S. civil service job with the federal government, we went through threatened shut-down stand-offs now & then.

What happened last time was that they closed everything down & sent everybody home without pay (except the "essential" employees, whoever they are). Then a week or so later, after matters settled down & the contentious issues were either resolved or kicked down the road a few more years, all the employees got paid retroactively, in essence converting the earlier unpaid furlough into paid vacation time at taxpayers' expense -- a good deal for bureaucrats, not so great for the taxpayers.

The stand-off then was over appropriations, not public debt ceiling. No doubt the current political pulling & hauling between the major parties isn't all that much different, whichever it is that has'm at odds this time. So it goes.

Still, I have a tough time with the idea of borrowing more money for the purpose of covering interest payments coming due on existing debt.

That's like using my Visa card to pay off my Master Charge balance, & using my American Express to pay off my Visa card balance, & using my Discover Card to pay off my American Express balance, & using my Master Charge to pay off my Discover Card balance.

Before many rounds of that, somebody is going to blow the whistle & I'm bound to get caught.

Folks - a gentle reminder - political posts are not permitted on TUG.

Folks - I know that this thread was doomed from the beginning, but we can't talk politics here. This is the last warning.

We will also be flying to Denver in late August 2011. However, our final destination for the trip will be MMVL in Breckenridge.

This is a specific issue about subsidizing rural airports where there aren't enough flights to generate revenue for those personnel. So if you are flying major airport - major airport, it won't affect you either way.

I really doubt that the FAA or TSA will shut down, but unless you are going to Hawaii, maybe come up with an alternative plan, bus, car, train etc. I'd love to live in Hawaii, but with friends and family here, not only the cost, but the possibility of something happening (like 9/11) is very off-putting.

Over 2000 years, something like 9/11 has only happened once...i think you'll be fine

Ride - I can assure you that over the last 2,000 years there have been far worse attacks than 9/11.

I've never heard that word. I always thought the correct word is "okole." ?

So what you guys are saying is, we don't really have to worry about more events like 9/11....since it could be so much worse :p

I don't know, i do tend to wear rose colored glasses...i just think the TSA is a very bloated Association that doesn't really accomplish anything of worth...we hear stories every day of things slipping through...sure they catch some things....but Strictly IMO, if you stop treating everyone like a criminal, you'll find alot less people act like criminals(Not all of them, but alot)

No, what we are saying is that although 9/11 was horrible for the US, it certainly was not the only horrible attack in the last 2,000 years.

My threshold for politics starts a bit higher.
But I bow to greater wisdom... lest it be Congress on the issue of FAA funding or ... the Florida legislature on the issue deregulating TS's?

Slap me with a wet noodle.

Thanks for pointing out the difference - posts discussing political issues that deal directly with timesharing issues are permitted on TUG.

TUG Posting rules:

Avoid posting about politics, religion, or contentious social issues
Unless directly related to timesharing, such discussions are prohibited in these forums, including TUG Lounge. We've been down that road before, it was ugly, and we are not going there again.

Here's how I keep perspective: If you flew the year 9/11 happened, even that year you were more likely to die from a car wreck or from several things we generally think of as rare, including suicide. 9/11 could happen every single year and flying would still be safer than driving or having a human brain.
