All I can say is HOLY MOLY! WOW!!! I am blown away by the improvements in this camera over my already excellent Nikon D300! The battery is still on the charger but here is the very first shot out of the box. The focus is SPOT on and the colors are more vibrant than anything I have ever seen in the past. I don't have any Canon lenses (Nikon gal till today) so I got the 28-135 kit lens with the camera. So far it looks like it's going to be a fabulous getup.

That's a beautiful picture. It sort of looks like HD tv. I assume this isn't a point-and-shoot camera.

Holy early adopter, SDKath; that is beautiful!

The 28-135 is a nice lens, I like it but it's not wide enough for some stuff. Bob is right; the 17-55 is amazing. Of course it costs it, too. But it is worth every penny. I take maybe 99% of my shots with the 17-55. (Don't get it mixed up with the 18-55 kit lens.) You can do anything Canon with the 17-55 and the 70-200L. The sharpest 70-200L is reputedly the f4 version either with or without IS. I have the f2.8, and I have no complaints at all.

I would get a 7D, but I got a freshman in college now, and I have to get by with the 40D. Which is fine, I love it. But yes, the 7d makes me want.

But, will it fit in your shirt pocket? :)

I'm drooling with anticipation to see what wonders Katherine will share with us. I want to get DW a new camera for her BD next month, but won't be a D7. Her eye is much better than mine. Poetic justice. I'm college art/photography trained and she is the home ec masters and I'm the better chef. Go figure....

Ahhhh.... finally a convert. Needed to go to Canon long ago.:D

Thanks for the tips! I just ordered the 70-200 f/4 (new rebate out as of yesterday so it was almost $200 less than last week!). It's coming tomorrow (gotta LOVE Amazon overnight Sat delivery for the things you want the most). I chose it over the 2.8 because I heard it's much lighter. I had a 70-200 f/2.8 for my Nikon but I sold it because I hardly ever used it due to it's sheer size. I am hoping the f/4 will be lighter and therefore easier for me to use day to day. I will post pix as soon as it arrives.

I was going to sell the kit lens but I really like it so far. I will take it out tomorrow for more fun and games. The 28-135 range is very useful for the kids and everyday shots. I think I would miss the zoom in the 17-55 although the wide angle would be great to have.

The problem is also that on my list is a replacement for my old Nikon 105mm f/2.8 macro. It's a fab lens that I will really miss and I "need" a macro. But it's once again $$$$$$$$. I better be good and nice so Santa can help me this year. :)

So Katherine, what are you doing with the D300? Any lenses or other equipment you want to sell? I have a D300 fanatic in my household, and Christmas IS coming... ;)

Your Canon must be a fantastic camera. Looking forward to seeing what it lets you do.

Dave

Wow, converting to Canon after going all the way to D300 with Nikon and the corresponding lens. Curiosity compels me to ask, why the switch? This isn't meant to criticize. As you said, both are excellent cameras.

Why replace the old D300 at all? There are times that you'll find it handy to have two camera bodies with different lenses already set up and ready to go. Imagine being out with your new D7 and either having a limited zoom range or a slow lens when what you really needed was a longer range or a faster lens? Keep one style lens on one body and the second body with a corresponding different lens/range for shots you might not have planned on taking. That way you'll always be ready and there will be less fuss with trying to change lenses for varying shooting conditions.

Mostly because DH really wanted the HD movie mode at the 30fps. His company foot the bill for 3 lenses so how could I say no! He will use it to make some corporate videos that can be published straight to their intranet. And I will play with the camera part since I can't make movies to save my life.

Plus I was just excited to try something new. Also, my 2 close friends have Canon gear and I am looking forward to being able to share their lenses. It is quite a culture shock though. The biggest thing is that the darn lenses zoom in the opposite way that Nikon does! So I am constantly zooming out when I should be zooming in!

Oh yeah, and there is no way I can keep both cameras. Nice idea but I need some money to cover the $1700 body price tag!

Here are a couple of 100% crops! Shot with my new 70-200 f/4 handheld, auto-ISO, shutter priority...

Of course, Canon also just introduced a new 100mm macro lens with IS, and it's an "L".
Have you tried the video yet? :whoopie:
Ron

Edit to add that Fred Miranda has a buy and sell board where you can get used equipment, (including macro lenses and even Nikon stuff).

I found an old pencil sketch of myself dug out my box of 128-size box of crayolas. Now I'm coloring myself jealous.

Also got the new Canon macro lens (sold my Nikon one). Here is the very first shot out of the camera with the 100mm Macro (and the 100% crop of the image). Nothing short of incredible!
