I am now back to yahoo! I enjoyed google but their new policy is totally unacceptable if not dangerous!
People can actually track yor current location, if they know where you live they can rob your home or worse.
It is amazing the repercussions I believe this new tracking technology has!

I like Microsoft's Bing. Google is evil.

It's the Android phone they are tracking. :annoyed:

They aren't tracking your laptop with Google search - so going to yahoo makes little difference.

Whenever I want to rob someone I just follow them home from the grocery store..I dont need no fancy tracking device

Last week traveling in Mexico, I logged into my Yahoo account from my iPad. Up pops a dialog box asking if Yahoo can use my location. I don't care, so click yes. Next thing I know Yahoo is putting a whole bunch of ads in Espanol on my screen, so it ain't just Google that knows where you are.

I think the op meant someone could track your location as away from home and then burglarize your empty house.

I've got no issue with Google tracking my Android phone - I really don't think they will be selling the data they gather to the local meth head. I also have security at my home because the local meth head might just follow me home from the store and wait for me to leave (or worse not wait).

The same could be said of TUG when people list their upcoming trip dates and locations. :shrug:

A similar invitation: Including your home address on luggage tags. :doh:

I live down a dirt road in the woods. There are other homes down here and neighbors with guns..seriously!

Note to self: don't mess with Momeason. Or (from another thread) Easyrider. Take care if I run into Ron at the supermarket.

:eek:

And I'm one of momeason's neighbors - the one with the big dogs!
i was thinking the same thing. Even if my mobile device gives my location away (voluntary facebook checking in comes to mind), that doesnt guarantee my Alarm A (ADT home security) isnt on, and even worse for them: Alarm B (pitbull with big teeth and strong jaws, and no warning barks!)

When I spend all my money on vacations...I got nothin' left to rob!:rofl:

Mine is a Bulldog ...

Charter Arms Bulldog that is.

Basically the new system gives you no privacy.

Others also have their issues, Google just makes it too simple for people to track you and your every move on the web and where you are in real time.

Feels like the real 1984 Novel by George Orwell!

I happen to value my privacy, I also know that theives can be opertunistic.
Sometimes the thieves are people you know.

I happen to value my privacy...

The notion that anyone has privacy any more is rather quaint, or rather, antiquainted.
Its simply way too easy to...
-- get a list of your real estate (and if you pay your taxes) from the county records online;
-- look at your house and backyard with Google's Earth and Street-View;
-- get a list of your traffic citations and other court proceedings from the clerk's office online;
-- find out if your profesional license is in good standing, where you work, or if you hold corporate office;
-- cameras at nearly every major city intersection watch you as you pass thru or pick your nose.

I can suggest that, when in public, we try to look normal. Someone is watching.

I happen to value my privacy,

sorry dude...that ship has sailed

Its Mayberry all over again...Instead of the barber shop, and back fence we go to the internet for our gossip. With facebook, twitter, google and all the others, everybody knows, or can know everybody else's business.

why would anyone think that Google ever valued their privacy to start with?? When GMail debuted, they were actually touting the "never really deleted" aspect, which I found alarming but others found comforting. :shrug:

The Information Age has been going on for quite some time now. Not just internet - what about all those key chain loyalty cards people have? Purchases are tracked in order to offer you coupons or whatnot on what you buy. Do you not think that they use the data in other ways, too? Wouldn't a retailer want a handle on who makes up their customer base?

It's pretty easy to find something "free" where all you have to do is give up some privacy. to me, that's not really free after all.

Not interested in Facebook or Twitter. Don't want to "follow" someone, not interested in being followed.

But along those lines, has it escaped your notice that passports are microchipped? cell phones have GPS locators in them? The technology is not new, it's jsut become more available to the masses. to use or misuse.

The reality is that to Google (and others) WE (or our eyeballs and associated wallets) are the product they sell. Google makes (in the words of Carl Sagan) 'billions and billions' on selling US to advertisers.

Data mining and it's associated risks are the price we pay for living in the digital age. I don't think that you can escape it other than living in a cave (one you dig, not buy) and living on a gray, cash only, economy. Don't drive, use a credit card, shop for groceries except in 'mom 'n' pop stores for cash, and for heaven's sake, no computer or cell phone.

I prefer not to have my head in the sand pretending that it isn't happening, but won't hide from it either.

I agree. Those who like to talk about how they proudly "live off the grid" go to a lot of trouble to do so.

I don't really care if my grocery store knows what I buy. I use credit cards and really don't care what they think about my fuelling/travel habits. Those that I do business with have my data and I'm ok with that. None of this is new.

I know I'm not invisible and that's ok. I'm just not interested in divulging more info than is necessary and it very much depends on who is doign the asking.

I want to set up an account with hotmail, google, yahoo or one of those for my response address for online sales, etc. Which one would anyone recommend?
Thanks.

Google's new tracking policy for their web search engine only affects those that are logged into their Google account while doing searches or using one of Google's other services. I can't remember the last time I logged into my Google account. Would be curious to know how your local neighborhood thief is going to obtain this data and use it to rob your home.
