Has anyone played any of the courses in or near Cancun lately? Last year they were all closed due to hurricane damage.

In April we did a golf outing, arranged by the resident golf pro at the Royal Islander, to the Iberostar resort not too far from Cancun. It was a great deal with transportation, 18 holes of golf with a cart, and unlimited food and drinks for $152/person.

Karen, I didn't know there WAS a golf pro at the Islander! Please tell me more about this. Sounds SUPER. Two years ago we played at Pok de Pok. Was OK. Last year it was closed due to hurricane damage, so I was wondering what's up.

Apparently this golf pro spends about six months of the year in residence at the Royal Islander. We found out about him when we went to one of the weekly activities where he demonstrated a golf instruction system that he also was promoting lessons for during the week. He said he takes groups of golfers on this golf outing once or twice a week, I think.

He went along on the outing with us and there was a vanload of participants. My husband, our son and his friend played golf and I was able to go along as a golf cart rider with my husband. For some extra fee I got to participate in the food and drinks part of the package.

I don't know exactly what months the golf pro is there. In April he said it was getting close to the time for him to return to the States. There was an American lady who lives in Cancun and helped with the outing that day and I got the impression she might be running the program when he was away.

Maybe the concierge at the Royal Islander could let you know if they still are operating that program. We thought it was a great deal.

I was there in Feb. and Jim (the golf pro) took a van full down to the Ibostar to golf and it was a great day. Van ride, golf , food and drinks all where included. I business office should have the info to contact him. It is well worth the trip. Hope he is there this coming Feb. Will go again.
