We put a wood burning fireplace in the house we just built. It was a self contained unit that is designed to passively circulate air around the back of it and send heat out through a couple of vents. It looks gorgeous but during the last couple of power outages I was wishing for a wood stove.
We had a gas fireplace when we lived in the city and I found I was rarely motivated to turn it on. Some of the newer ones are getting fairly realistic looking though.
