Has anyone been to the park in the first part of October? We are thinking of going then and was wondering if we will have any problems with snow then. We want to go on the going to the sun road and travel to Banff and Lake Louise. Any help on where to stay and activities to do will be helpful.

You shouldn't have any problems with snow, but no guarantees. The weather is very unpredictable in the mountains of Montana. The Meadowlake golf and ski resort is a nice place to stay (Whitefish, MT) and is a short drive to the west entrance to the park. Can't help much with the rest of the trip as I usually stay in motels. Glacier to Waterton and then up to Banff is truly one of the most spectacular trips you can take. The Canadian rockies are rugged and beautiful. A stopover in Calgary can also be a lot of fun as they have a zoo, olympic village and lots of beautiful sites. Don't miss out on lake louise and lake emerald when in Banff, nothing quite like them.

We visited Glacier a few years ago, and they closed the road on July 4th due to snow! So it can really snow anytime, but I would suggest that your chances are greater in October than July.

We went to Glacier National Park the first week in October a few years ago. It was a gorgeous time to visit as the golden aspen leaves were at their peak. Truly spectacular...especially on the eastern side of the park. Most days were sunny and a bit cool. One day we had a light snow storm. Afterwards, the sun came out and it was absolutely stunning with the fresh snow and the fall foliage.

All of the lodges in the park were closed for the season, but this made it very quiet and peaceful. It's a very nice time of the year. We stayed at Meadowlake in Columbia Falls, and I was impressed with our unit. Glacier is one of the most beautiful places in the whole USA, and it is well worth a visit.

Sounds like a great trip. I have been to Glacier 3 times. The weather is unpredictable which adds to the parks mystique. Having been caught in a July snowstorm above Cobalt lake on my last trip, i would suggest that you plan on encountering the worst conditions possible.

Whitefish was a lot of fun and the Flathead lakearea is beautiful. There was a dam tour in a nearby National Forest that was fascinating and worth the time.

Really highly recommend one of the red bus tours. We only had one day in the park and found this the best way to see it. Mainly because one person is paying attention to the road and missing everything. We heard our ranger say that he knew a couple that as soon as they came back down the mountain, that the husband signed up immediately for the tour. The wife asked why, he said, "well you got to see everything, but I was so white knuckled I missed EVERYTHING!!"

Just got back from Island Park Village Resort in Idaho. There was considerable snowfall in early Jun at the 7000 ft level and above. But it didn't stop traffic but freaked out my Southern California sister in law.
