Gettysburg Town Guides

While Licensed Battlefield Guides give tours mostly of the battlefield and the town, Licensed Town Guides exclusively give historic tours of the town.
They work out of the Wills House and the Gettysburg Hotel.

Has anyone done the Gettysburg Town Tour
with - Licensed Town Guide - Lisa Shower ?

We did the battlefield one, not the town, the guide drives your car around the battlefield and other sites. It was ok, but his information seemed rather canned and left little time for questions, extra stops or staying in any one place with only enough time to take a couple of pictures. I know he had to stay on the schedule, but we would have like more time some places and less on others. I'd recommend going to the visitors center, which is great, for orientation first and then using the map you can get there to tour the sites on your own at your own pace. I think the same would apply to the town tour. Gettysburg is very small and it would be easy to see the sites on your own.

We stayed at the Farnsworth House Inn, which is famous for being haunted. We didn't see the ghost, but it is a fun place to stay! At least go for dinner, the food was very good with local specialties and the dining room has nice, Victorian decor with lot's of antiques.

The balltefield gift shop has a self guided CD tour that we found to be nice. You put it in the cars CD player, then follow the driving instructions while the guide on the CD explains the battle and the significance of the piece of ground you're standing on. You can take as much or as little time as you want and you don't have to worry about tipping.

We've also done the bus tour, which was good as a basic orientation to the battlefield and one I woud suggest if you've never been. We've done a couple of walking ghost tours of the town that we found interesting if nothing else. We've never taken the town tour.

I would second the CD tour. I really liked being able to spend more time where I wanted to hike around, then get back in the car and pick up where the narrator left off. I didn't stay there, but saw the Doubleday Inn and it looks pretty nice.

Went to The American Civil War Wax Museum

297 Steinwehr Ave - Gettysburg, PA 17325
on a beautiful Friday afternoon in April 2013

We did the self guided tour of the rooms and
the digitally enhanced Battleroom Auditorium
followed by a visit to the Gettysburg gift shop.

The American Civil War Wax Museum presents the entire story of the Civil War era and the Battle of Gettysburg with remarkable realism & recreates history with life-sized dioramas of the Civil War.

The Museum & Gift Shop have been staples in the Gettysburg community for almost one half of a century! (Located next to McDonalds)

Gettysburg Independence Day Parade and Fireworks

* July 3, 2013 - Parade Starts at 7:00 pm

History of the Borough of Gettysburg.

The parade will start at 7 pm and follow the same route as the Remembrance Day Parade. We will assemble in the Middle School parking lot on Lefever Street, proceed west on Middle St., turn south onto Baltimore St., then follow Steinwehr Avenue to the area of Gen. Pickett’s Buffet.

Fireworks are being planned for 10:00 pm in the vicinity of Mummasburg Road north of Gettysburg and will be visible from throughout the Borough including the Peace Light area.

Public parking is limited on the Gettysburg College campus.
Fireworks are sponsored by the Gettysburg Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Anyone going to Gettysburg for the 150th Anniversary?
