I'm attending a conference in Detroit, MI at the end of October and prefer to take the train from Toronto to Windsor, then cross the border via cab or bus or something to Detroit. I will do the reverse and train it back to Toronto at the end of the conference.

The only challenge is the matter of crossing the border. Are reasonable cap fares available for getting from Windsor to Detroit? Or would one take a bus? Just looking for a least-hassle option. Airfares are too steep, driving is a hassle and a Greyhound bus is, well, a Greyhound bus!

Thanks in advance for any advice on this!

There used to be a casino shuttle bus from the Windsor to Detroit (& back) casinos. I seem remember hearing that one of them closed a while back, so the shuttle service may have stopped as well, but maybe not.

Again, Google is your friend!

Windsor to Detroit

It may be a bit of a hassle and expensive BUT you could take a taxis from the train station directly to your conference in Detroit OR take a taxis to the bus station in Windsor. Then you would have to take a bus from there through the tunnel to Detroit. Where in Detroit is your conference? You would then have to take a taxis to wherever your conference is. Seems like a big hassle to me! Why not just drive yourself. If you are depending on bus schedules etc. you may end up being late for your conference or exhausted from all the travel.
Keep in mind that if you decide to drive and take the bridge over to Detroit there is major construction taking place because of the new Windsor /Detroit border crossing!

Good Luck!

Thanks for the tip! I did investigate the tunnel bus and will have to weigh the pros and cons of driving. I dislike driving long distances but this time it might make sense.

Why not take the train directly into Detroit? Does Via not have a connection to Amtrak?

Windsor to Detroit

NO Via does not connect to Amtrak! Remember we are talking about 2 different countries here. There is a border between Windsor and Detroit.....custom/immigration involved. And the US customs crossing is a very serious and no nonsense operation. This is a very busy border with and one should allow ample time for crossing.
