Get Something From Amazon You Didn't Order? What Did You Do?

First time here. I got an item I didn't order. I saw there is a link to click for a mailing label to ship it back, but it wants a 17 digit code from the packing slip. I typed the itsie-bitsie, teenee-tiny characters from all over the labels, the packing slip (none were 17 long), and every time it returned a 'code not recognized' message. So I just put it away, assuming if they really want it, they'll send a email. The item is something I never even contemplated ordering, isn't needed, and I never paid anything for it.
 
I recently received cough medicine instead of vitamins and when I notified them, they said keep it, and we'll send you the vitamins. They did.
 
Google "Amazon" "brushing".

We've also received useless random items we never ordered. It's probably a scam ...
 
I received a package that I never ordered. There was no invoice inside or anything else besides the shipping label on the box. I was concerned about my credit card being compromised as well as our Amazon accounts but when I called and finally got a person at Amazon they could see no evidence of the order on any of our accounts. Most bizarre thing ever. I never got a charge on my credit card either so WTH? I stuck the box in our closet and it's stayed there. I'm going to have to check out 1st Class' post information above.
 
My daughter kept getting packages from Amazon with another person’s name but her address. Every time she contacted Amazon, they told her to keep it. They eventually found the Daughter’s address was attached to the other person’s address. Eventually the random packages stopped. Daughter donated them to Goodwill.

Following up on 1stClass's suggestion to google "brushing", here's a CBS News article:

The scam is known as "brushing." An online seller – usually overseas – purchases their own products through fake buyer accounts they've created. The products are shipped to a real address. Then, the seller writes a positive review of their items from the fake buyer account.

"The positive reviews are like gold," retail security expert Brian Kilcourse said. "People are always looking for a new hole in the structure at Amazon to be able to put more fake positive reviews."

In a statement to CBS News, Amazon said they investigate every report of customers receiving unsolicited packages and will ban all vendors and reviewers who abuse the reviews system.

I've heard of people getting scores of packages from Amazon. Weird stuff, too. There was no rhyme or reason to what they were getting, and were obvious "brushees".
 
yes, we've also received wrong incorrect packages from Amazon, they said keep it and we will resend the right stuff
I guess this weird policy works for a company that sends billions of packages :rolleyes:

They may be worried about taking something back during the current Corona Virus situation.

CVS is not currently taking anything back (which includes unopened products).

Kroger, is also not taking anything back, which includes unopened products.
 
I did get a couple packages one day in addition to my actual package. The other 2 had different names and addresses. I called Amazon right away, thinking how simple it would be for them to send the driver right back to pick them up. However, they said there was nothing they could do (must have been cheap stuff) and told me to keep or throw out the packages. I decided to deliver them. I found both addresses were behind locked gates and figured the driver must have been lazy and didn't want to deal with the locked gates. I tossed one over the fence, I found a gate I could get through at the other place (large complex with several gates).
 
About 6 months ago I received a bird feeder from Amazon I didn't order. I checked and it was never charged to my Credit Card. I sent it back to Amazon and they posted a Credit to my account for its value. Note that I do not have Prime and maybe buy from Amazon 2, maybe 3 times a year. Weird....

Do you have a Kohl's in your area? They do returns to Amazon for free. Let them scan the codes and so forth.

Thanks! Good suggestion. They just opened here about 2 weeks ago (where Sears folded) and I have never been into a Kohl's. It would be an adventure! Woo-Hoo!

It's a good company. They try to offer decent things at fair prices. (Imagine that!)

Be very careful and contact Amazon or Ebay to see if there is a fraudulent account with your name on it. We received an item about 3 months ago as an Ebay return with me as the seller. I tried to find it in my Ebay account, nothing there, so tried to contact Ebay (and failed), and then got busy and figured that if they wanted it they would request it.

Fast forward to this month, where I received a collections notice in the mail from an Allied International Credit collections company, stating that I owed Ebay close to $1000! I wasn't sure if the collections agency was a scam so I contacted Ebay Takeover Accounts group. Apparently, someone opened an Ebay account in my name and used a different email and PayPal account to send themselves money from buyers. Ebay told me that in many cases the thieves sell the item and never ship after collecting the money into the PayPal account. In this case they actually shipped items so I assume the items must have been stolen or they didn't want to pay the Ebay seller fees. Ebay told me that they believe the seller wanted to avoid the Ebay fees and then the late fees piled on so it went to collections.

So far, Ebay has been very responsive about getting this resolved and shut down this fraudulent account. What is scary is that the thief only had my name and physical mailing address so could have created this fraudulent account after taking a photo of an envelope with my name and address in our mailbox or in transit at the post office, or even public records. I am requesting a letter from Ebay to dispute in case my credit gets dinged and asking for their help to clean it up if it does.

Ebay is in the process of closing this loophole by requiring sellers to provide a bank account and certifying it instead of a PayPal email address. However this remains a significant security hole in their system until they clean up all of the seller accounts by next year.

PSA: Contact Ebay to ensure there isn't a fraudulent account in your name. Might want to do the same with Amazon as I am not familiar with their controls. This might be simple brushing, but it could be more serious.

We were getting alot of our neighbors stuff and they received alot of our stuff. The delivery guys don't like our hilly neighborhood.

I received an empty bubble wrap envelope from Amazon a few weeks ago. Had to contact them to receive credit for what they didn't put in the envelope. Then I had to re-order the item and wait another week or so for delivery. CS rep said she couldn't just send me another one, I had to re-order. I'm kinda curious if they checked the tracking number to verify what the envelope weighed. Should have been a pound or two if the item was enclosed, but only an ounce or two without.

Great company. They have great sales. My mother worked there part time when I was a teenager and she made me open a credit card to start my credit history. I still have that card, it's my longest line of credit! Started in Wisconsin by the Kohl family. (Herb Kohl is a nice guy, I met him once at a Milwaukee Bucks exhibition game. He was attending the game with a local politician that I was acquainted with.) "Kohl (born February 7, 1935) is an American businessman and politician. Alongside the help of his brother and father, the Kohl family created the Kohl's Department Stores chain and Kohl went on to be president and CEO of Kohl's. Kohl is a former United States Senator from Wisconsin and a member of the Democratic Party."

Lots of good things from Wisconsin. Cheese, Beer, Kohl's. My wife (Sun Prairie). I like 'em all, and LOVE some of 'em!
