I was diagnosed with GERD and esophogitis two years ago and have been on proton pump inhibiters since. It got worse again last fall and I had lots of tests done including an endoscopy which showed that I know had Barretts. I had been taking fosomax, stopped in 2006, and had been taking celebrex, stopped last January, and I've been on a restrictive diet avoiding coffee, chocolate, tomatoes, citrus and alcohol. So, I'd just like to hear from others who may have had this same diagnosis. The scary thing is that it can turn into cancer.

Sorry I can't answer your questions, Liz, but I wish you the best in your treatment for this health issue.

What is the cause of your GERD? Hiatal hernia? If so, I have had a little experience with that that I would be happy to share with you.

You are fortunate to have discovered it prior to it turning into cancer.

My dads was not discovered until it was cancerous. Needless to say he had to undergo major surgery and treatment. But I am thankful to report that it's been six years since his surgery and he is doing quite well for a 82 year old. He does have some digestive problems and he "loses his lunch" quite easy sometimes, and he still and has to go in for a process that "stretches his esophagus" every now and then. But he still is able to get outdoors to his garden and maintain a fairly active lifestyle.

Good luck to you.

I have had symptoms of hiatal hernia for years, but the gastro doctor didn't mention that and I forgot to ask. So, I think I'll try to get another appt. if that is possible. It sounds like that could be treated with surgery. My concern is I've been on all this medication for over 2 years and although the symptoms of the GERD looks better on the endoscopy, the Barrett's has been added to the mix, so I don't know if that is WHY the esophogitis looks better or if the worsening that caused the Barretts is gone now. I find this all very scary.
Thanks,
Liz
