I am planning on going to Ft. Meyers next spring and hope to attend a Red Sox spring training game while there. Does anyone have any suggestions on timeshares to stay at? thanks, Mike

You may have noticed the link at the top of the page to the "Tug Resort Databases." That would provide you with extensive reviews on many timeshares in that area. It is available to members.

I'm not trying to avoid the question but a timeshare that I might recommend might not fit your requirements at all. The reviews really give you a full spectrum of what to expect and makes it much easier to make a decision.

But you have to be a TUG member to access the reviews.

Mike, it is hard to get a timeshare during that time period. It is also hard to get tickets to the Red Sox games. If you can't get one along the beach, and you would want the north end of Fort Myers Beach, then you might have to settle for Lehigh Resort, inland but a decent resort. Understand traffic is horrendous at that time of year and any drive is a slow drive.

Golf Villas of Bonita Springs is very nice for timeshare accommodations. Not on the beach but still nice. I have stayed there many times, when I was an owner at Split Rock Resort (Poconos) as Golf Villas were a sister property and were a free internal exchange with Split Rock.

They are about 15 minutes south of FT Myers Beach area.

I stayed at ghe Golf Villas many years ago. I don't believe they are timeshares any longer, they are not in the RCI book and someone who was renting there told me they were not timeshares.

Sure they are . . . here is their listing on RCI.com . . .

I was last there in 2002.

As much as I hate to agree with an Ames person, the last timeshare we would stay at in SW Florida is Golf Villas. It is merely an apartment complex in town, and not a resort.

I have been going to SW Florida, Ft. Myers Beach in particular, for 30 years, coincidentally while I was living in Ames. I have studied the availability in January for almost ten years, searching almost every day. I have recorded my last 3500 searches or s.:

http://www.tugbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13540

I know many of the resorts intimately and the rest somewhat. I have my own ranking of them and have a book half-written laying around here somewhere.

With the exception of Seawatch on the Beach, FMB itself has several lesser resorts, some lesser than others. Some areas of FMB are quite congested and it has become a local motorcylces destination in recent years. We enjoy staying at some of the resorts and not at others. Most of them are not the lush models you see at the end of tours. ;)

The nicer resorts are on Sanibel/Captiva and Marco Island.

The area itself is a beautiful area, one in which we intended to buy a retirement home, until all the other baby boomers decided the same thing and drove prices through the ceiling. People and congestion have become a serious problem as the infrastructure cannot seem to keep up with the growth.

Feel free to contact me by email or to post a list of what you see available and I will give you my ranking.

I suppose Jim, lucky for you then that you aren't agreeing with me ;)

I said that I thought Golf Villas is nice. Sure it is not "resort" as in big pools, lots of amenities or other things that many want from their timeshare. But if you are looking for spacious, clean accommodations that are relatively central to all that you may want to do in SW Florida (Ft. Myers, Captiva/Sanibel, Everglades) it serves as a great home base. Certainly better and more centrally located than Leigh High Acres.

(who isn't "from" Ames, so she's not insulted by the "Ames person" comment) :)

This thread would do better on the Florida Board

Now don't get me started on Lehigh. That's a place we have a lot of experience at as it was the only resort our crappy trader could get us into for years.

And we enjoyed our stays there, I guess not knowing any better.

Here are my bottom 10 SW FL resort rankings:

Windward Passage
Sandrift Resort
Caribe Beach Resort
Kahlua Beach Club
Sea Oats Beach Club
White Sands
Charlotte Bay Resort and Club
Estero Island Beach Club
Marco Resort and Club
Golf Villas of Bonita Springs

I've not updated them for awhile, so can't really vouch for them. For instance, I don't know what Caribe is doing in there.

Go Cyclones! (I keep getting invited back for football lettermen functions. A few years back it was to actually play in a scrimmage. That's pretty funny! It's good to see some cyclones making it to the pros again. When I was around the coaches were Johny Majors, Jackie Sherill, Jimmy Johnson and Joe Avezanno. Since all but one are retired, and they were all kids themselves back then, that should say something.)

Where are those golf villas located? I remember traveling back quite a ways to get to them, and now that we live nearby, I want to find them. I laugh at the reviews. People claim it takes 10 minutes to Fort Myers Beach and 20 to Sanibel from there. that must be the old days before they started the 7 year widening project on the Bonita Springs portion of 41.
