Do you think you need a car to get around St. Thomas to go to beaches and restaurant. How are the roads to drive on. We will be a 73 year old couple. What beaches to visit and things to see.

We were the same age when we visited a few years ago. Because they drive on the other side of the road I absolutely refused to rent a car. I’m too hard wired to drive on the left hand side of the road.

We are close to your age. The roads are pretty good but they drive on the left side. We rent a car and other than one time when husband forgot which side of the road we should be on we were fine. As others have said, Sapphire Beach is beautiful but we enjoy Secret Beach and Coki Beach. We really like Amalia Cafe located downtown Charlotte Amalie. Yes, taxis are plentiful, not cheap, charge by the person. There is an official fare list so you know what it will cost.

However, besides left side driving, the roads are narrow, twisting, unlit, hanging off the side of the mountain single lane roads.
Likely you will be more comfortable using taxis.

We both drive on the left side in Grand Cayman with multiple traffic circles ( going the wrong way) and heavy traffic in some areas. But neither of us drive in STT, far better to relax and be driven.

We were very intimidated by driving on the left the first time we went, so we paid for taxis. Taxi rates are pre determined and are charged by the person. It can get expensive since there was four of us. The next time we rented a car and had a blast. Yes, you are on the left, but speed is about 20-25 miles an hour you're not going very fast. We had no trouble managing around town. The island is not flat with a lot of elevation changes and it does have curves, but you are going slow. We used the WAZE app to get us around without trouble. If you're unsure about it then take taxis. It's easy to grab a taxi when you come out of the airport they are all waiting when you walk out of the airport. They also have bag fees.

Megan's Bay is our favorite on St. Thomas and Trunk Bay on St. John. Both of those beaches have concession stands. You can rent chairs and umbrellas at Megan's Bay and only chairs at Trunk Bay. Both have an entrance fee. Coki and Sapphire Beach were okay for us, a little rocky and we do not snorkel.

Prime is our favorite for a fancy dinner at sunset, Tap n Still for a casual burger joint, Margaritaville, Glady's Cafe has been popular with everyone we talk to, but haven't made it there ourselves. Traditional island food. We had Senor Pizza and there is Pizza Amore that is closer to Frenchman's Cove. On St. John we enjoyed High Tide and North Shore Deli as we grab sandwiches before we head off to Trunk Bay.
