hi! my name is charles and i'm fairly new to timeshares. i learned enough about DVC hanging around the DIS to feel comfortable with a small contract at OKW for trips to wdw but i'd like to learn more about other timeshares.

from what little i've read, foxrun seems like it might be a good place to start. i'm only a few hours away so it's an easy drive and i think i'd enjoy staying there on a regular basis. this thread suggests that it is also at least a decent trader in II, although i know trading power and getting ACs can change from year-to-year. at present, i'm fairly flexible and would be able to take advantage of last minute deals and offseason travel so decent trading power for reasonable maintenance fees intrigues me...

i noticed an ebay auction that says a foxrun resort is affiliated with RCI. are some parts of the resort not affiliated with II? is the RCI membership included in the annual dues? (BTW, i've read the FAQ on II fees, but can't find the RCI FAQ.)

generally, i just wanted to hear from current or former foxrun or other NC timeshare owners (especially in the mountains) to get some advice and warnings about things that i might need to watch out for. i did read that foxrun was downgraded by II but intends to regain that status...if y'all have any opinions on the quality of the management group there, i'd like to hear them. thanks.

(BTW, if i posted in the wrong area, i'm ok with being kicked to a different forum. :) )

A lot of folks here own Foxrun. The MFs are a lot higher than they used to be, but not bad for a 2-bedroom.

Foxrun is dual affiliated -- it's affiliated with both RCI and II. I see this as a big plus, by the way. The RCI and II membership fees are not included in the MF -- I also see this as a plus; otherwise, you are paying membership fees for something you may end up not using.

There are some other resorts that are part of the same community (Fairfield Mountains) that have higher MFs and that are (I think) only affiliated with RCI. So, you want to know which resort, exactly, you are getting. I believe Foxrun MFs are currently $610, so that will help tell you which resort you are getting.

Foxrun is a decent trader, depending on where you want to go. We have had incredible trades with Foxrun, but it no longer works for DVC trades because DVC affiliated with RCI, and that has a lot of us disappointed.

We have a Yahoo group for Foxrun, and if you want an invite, so you can read all there is to know about Foxrun, then click on my name to the left of this post, and send me a P.M. with your email address.

Foxhunt at Sapphire Valley

You also may want to consider Foxhunt at Sapphire Valley. It's a similar resort in an equally (if not more) beautiful location in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. I used to own two weeks at Foxrun, and I currently own at Foxhunt.

The advantages I see of Foxhunt over Foxrun:

1) The units at Foxhunt have been completely renovated and are beautiful and up to date.

2) The HOA at Foxhunt is dynamic and pro-active. They communicate well with the owners. Within the past year, they have hired a new management company and new cleaning company. Things are improving dramatically at the resort.

3) Having been to both Lake Lure and Sapphire Valley, I think Sapphire has more to do in the area and the surrounding towns are much more interesting with better food, shops, activities, etc.

There are a couple of Foxrun & Foxhunt units on eBay right now. Neither mention lockoff. Do either of these resorts offer lockoff units?

No. Those aren't lockoffs.

Charles, your post reminds me of one of my first posts on tug back in 2005. I, too, was looking for something else besides our DVC points. If you are looking for a lock off in the NC mountains, we own at Fairways of the Mountains at Lake Lure (VRI managed) and it is a lock off - it has two kitchens in it. So it locks off into two one bedrooms. It is dual affiliated with RCI and II (has the silver select designation in II). Being a VRI managed resort, we get a discounted RCI membership - buy 2 get one year free.

So far we've only traded Fairways in II. I don't know how it would trade in RCI.

We also had kicked around buying at Sheraton Broadway plantation in Myrtle Beach to own a dual affiliated resort that trades with both RCI and II. I still might buy one if I can find a one bedroom platinum for a steal. :)

One other thing I'll add - the Fairways week we own is an "odd" year week. Which means it comes up every other year - like 2009, 2011, etc.. But since I can lock it off into 2 one bedrooms, I get a lot of bang for the maintenance fee buck. Plus, we were able to join II and RCI to take advantage of the rental deals.

Sheraton Broadway Plantation also has every other year weeks.

I just wanted to mention the every other year week option to you just in case you want to start small on maintenance fees.

On the same property as Foxrun is "Fairway of the Mountains" II code FWM - it is a 2BR sleep 8 lock-off that equals 2 1BR 4/4 weeks - and both 'halves' get an accomodation cert from II when deposited.
The units were update in the last 5 years to include full kitchens in both 'halves' A & B, upstairs and downstairs.
Trades in both II and RCI....trades just as well as FXR - and would give u the option to stay in one half and exchange the other in II.

edit - LOL, I skipped over Littlestars post about Fairways - sorry!

thanks for all of your responses! this is definitely giving me some options to think about. :D

just an update:

after shopping around a bit during 2009 and studying marriott and hgvc...and debating buying more DVC...last month, i saw an ebay ad for a summer week at fairways of the mountains for a dollar with all closing costs paid and half the 2010 maintenance fees. so i jumped in.

i liked the idea of a lockoff since i don't always need a 2BR. i hope they can hang onto their silver pineapple in II but i understand that trading power can always come and go...

i appreciate y'all's suggestions and i'm grateful to littlestar for coaching me through some of the closing details. closing went pretty quickly and the resort has confirmed that maintenance fees for 2010 have been paid and i'm clear for 2010 usage. i'm pretty excited.

after looking at my new owner packet, i have a couple more questions for any fairways owners who wander by:

-do i get to pick my check-in day (fri/sat/sun) for my week or is it decided for me? how does this work if i trade the week in II?

-if i trade one or both 1BRs in II, is there a lockoff fee imposed by fairways and/or II? (i noticed there is a lockoff fee for marriotts.)

if there's anything else you might want to suggest to a new fairways owner, feel free to throw it out here or pm me. thanks.

Charles, there is no lock-off fee for Fairways of the Mountains. :D

Also, check with II before you lock off and deposit because I just received an AC offer for a Fairways week if I would deposit 2010. (I only own odd year weeks - darn).

My Fairways weeks are Sunday check-ins. I'm in the process of giving my cousin one of my Fairways weeks (also a summer week) so she has something to trade or use because she loves the mountains.

I haven't got the offer for Fairway and I haven't got the offer for my Marriotts - I am beginning to feel a bit unloved by II :(

To the OP - ya done good!

Glad you got it, Pat. I received an offer last year, too, around the 12 month mark. They must have not had enough people deposit and are offering it again.

I hope to see an offer for my summer 2011 week - hopefully they'll offer it like they did last summer for the 2010 weeks.

I got the offer last May'09 for my week 17'10 which was the first week in the range offered.
Obviously they are not get their 'usual' amount of deposits that they are soliciting for more deposits - both my weeks are EOY which II should know - so I REALLY don't have a week 25 to give them (same as you!) until June 2011

good to hear.

unfortunately, i let II set up my account and for some reason they listed me as owning week 40. it's more in demand on II's travel demand index...but not what i own...:wall:

I would have them correct that. If they made a mistake, they should fix it.

yeah, i've called both II and the resort at this point to get things corrected. the fairways office is supposed to call me back at some point.

not too worried - just a small hassle.
