Several years ago I read a newspaper article about the impacts of Gonzaga's basketball program success on the overall university. As Gonzaga gained more recognition because of the basketball, overall giving to the school from alunni and other sources increased, and the number of applicants to the school increased (leading to a stiffening of admission requirements). Less quantifiable - but of at least equal importance -Department heads reported that faculty recruitment was easier, and the success rate on grants and research proposals seemed to increase as well.
Interesting article. I remember thinking that college athletics is really all about marketing and image. Provosts and chancellors support big-time athletics because it makes their primary job (which is fund-raising and outside support) easier.

The same factors are at play for the Mustangs. BSU's success in athletics translates directly into greater support for the school within the State Legislature and among Idaho citizenry. I would not be the least bit surprised if the increased prominence of the school also translated into greater visibility and recognition of the school's research programs.

The blue field is pretty unique. Bronco fans love it. The fact that the "big schools" constantly bitch about it being "bush league" makes Bronco fans love it that much more. "The Blue" is to BSU what the hedges are to UGA, "Rocky Top" is to the Vols, or Touchdown Jesus is to UND.
To Steve's comment: There was a surge in enrollment at BSU following BSU's first Fiesta Bowl win in '07.
I do know the Broncos don't get hung up on the rankings (theirs, or their opponents). They just try to beat the next team on their schedule. Tonight, that's #24 OSU, who just happens to have quite a penchant for beating highly ranked teams (just ask the Trojans ). Should be a great game.
This was not the best game I've seen BSU play. No 'gimmick' plays, too many (serious) penalties. Tempers flared on both sides. It was fun to have the national media in town and show off a little. BSU could well always be the little school with the blue turf, but it's our little school with the blue turf.
I just hope they maintain a clean program and can make this work for them and not have some overzealous alum(s) do them in like some others have had happen to them.
