Another home re-do! The kitchen area is tile which opens to the step-down family room. This room of the house is a "slab." The carpet has been removed but it's going to be home to a large golden retriever and an elderly smaller dog for the foreseeable future.

Any suggestions other than hardwood? I did bamboo in my last home and loved it! I hope to use a dark finished bamboo in the living room and dining room here. Also hoping to replace the carpet in the office/5th bedroom with cork. I've come up with creative flooring solutions successfully in other homes. Recently, I've seen the vinyl hardwood-type flooring installed and I was super impressed with it! Anyone have any experience with it?

Durable, easy care...and something WARM, that's my goal! Thoughts?

Stained concrete. We did this and it's great for our three dogs. The can't really damage it and messes are easy to clean. Choose a light color because the darker colors fade and look worn more quickly. Seriously, stained concrete flooring is one of the best home choices we've ever made. (We use a couple area rugs to add warmth and depth.)

There's some beautiful wood look tile out there now. We redid our downstairs about a year ago and I love it. We used the rustic looking tile. It isn't shiny or smooth, in fact it almost feels textured. Both of our dogs are older and I am glad that it isn't slippery for them to walk on. It hides dirt too. You have to pay more for the longer planks (ours are 40") and installation is trickier - probably not a DIY project, but it was worth every penny.

Durable, easy care, WARM are going to be hard to achieve on a concrete slab. Especially the WARM part. We found some 'groutable' vinyl tile at a home center when we refurb'ed a house in the mid-west. You REALLY have to look at it to see that it isn't porcelain tile-but cost a fraction as much. I think it would be durable enough for dogs, and about the same level of care as any hard surface, vacuum or sweep, mop. You'd want area rugs under seating areas to warm it up and control the acoustics.

Tarkett Fiber floor

We used this in our family/dog room (on a slab) in a wood pattern. There are many other patterns. Our Borzoi are over 70 and 80 pounds. No signs of wear from their nails that we can see.

Some people have thought that it is real wood!

And it's "phthalate free" too! :D

(I have no idea on earth what "phthalate free" even means in the first place, but it's a claim proudly stated on their web site). Good looking stuff, modern day materials. Very interesting; I learn something new here every day.

We recently installed a product called Konecto. It's a vinyl floating floor. It comes in wood-look plank style and also square marble-look.

It has a hard surface, is easy to clean but I'm not sure how the surface will hold up to a dog on it all the time. I know that it's great for spills, nothing gets between the seams.

With a Golden Retriever I would stay away from dark floors. You will see nothing but golden hair and tumbleweeds of fur on it. On the lighter colors you don't see the hair.

will say that wood laminate flooring has held up to a huge dog 1000x better than I expected...and it comes in nearly every color.

I also installed in a separate room some of that new vinyl "plank" flooring..and while it appears to be indestructible...it does show scuffs from furniture legs and dog claws.

stuff looks fantastic though, and is hands down the easiest flooring ive ever installed with the only tools required being a tape measure, ruler/straight edge, and a utility knife.

IMO tile feels more chilly than stained concrete. I can't imagine concrete being colder than regular tile.

You can add radiant heating under stained concrete just like how you can add it under tile.

When you have an existing slab you don't actually just stain it, you pour a new layer and stain that. Then there's a protective top layer. So it's not like a plain untreated slab of concrete.

Ah ha! So glad I asked! Great discussion! And exactly what I expected from TUG'ers - knowledgeable posts! Thank you! I'll definitely check those links!

I LOVE stained concrete! I hope we can do it in the sunroom and maybe even on the front covered front porch which runs the length of the house. I think it looks really pretty!

Jim, I love the idea of vinyl tile. I'm thinking that vinyl would be warmer than traditional ceramic or porcelain tile.

And, good reminder to go with a lighter color. I sweep up tumbleweeds daily. And, Brian, that's what I heard about the vinyl planks. Very appealing!

This product looks really good! Can you provide an idea of the cost. I have a 12 month old Labradoodle puppy. We're scheduled to have our wood floors and marble refinished next month, but I'm very worried it'll be a mess very soon afterward. Is this product available nationwide?

Did you buy it from this co? It looks like they are in IL and you are in OH.

No I did not. A very good friend is a flooring installer and I have worked for him part time off and on through the years. I purchased through him and had him install it for me.

Like Brian said, no special tools are needed with this type product. There are tabs that extend from one end and side that sticks to the corresponding piece.

Home Depot carries Allure which I believe at the time was made by Konecto. There were too many similarities in the instructions and other printed material not to have been made by them.

HD still carries this product and the snap together product called Allure Ultra.

Neither version will let water between the seams.

Check this link and click on the video to see how it works then look at the Ultra to see it's video also.

yep, I used the allure stuff from home depot.

was even cheaper than laminate flooring as well...I was really shocked.

Gentlemen, thank you, both! Thanks for the details! All good to know...and it sounds like we have a winner!

Sorry, just seeing this now. I have to ask DH the price....... It was $2,582. That includes labor and trim. The room was a large 2 car garage, originally, maybe 24 by 24.

I imagine it is available nationwide. We got it from Georgia Floors Direct. We originally saw it at our local home show.
