Flooding in Orlando Looks Awful

We have been at Cypress Harbour since before the storm began. There is a lot of foliage debris, and some small tree limbs on the ground, but we are not aware of any flooding of the streets through the resort. They have a big mess to clean up. But we took a walk over to the resort office, and the pool deck there has already been cleaned up and the chairs replaced. They were cleaning the pool itself when we were there. The grill and marketplace were both open, with regular services. The activity center will probably open tomorrow. Also, we didn’t lose power at all.

Good. I'm glad you were safe.

Glad to hear that the Orlando area is OK

He did not say Orlando area is okay, only the area by the resort. There was heavy flooding reported in some part of Orlando.

I was at the Sheraton Vistana Village until Wednesday morning when I decided to check out and head back home to SC. Although I checked out, I am still receiving texts and alerts from the resort. On Wednesday they cancelled all activities and closed the restaurant. That same evening, they shut down the elevators. This morning, they were asking owners and guests to stay in their villas due to flooding in the streets. The parking lots were pretty empty when I left so I am assuming that, like me, most people left early.

We are at SHeraton Vistana Villages. There was some flooding around the resort in some of the parking areas. The main lake in the Bella section got pretty high and apparently spilled out into the parking area. That along with all the rain caused one large area of the parking area to fill with water as there was nowhere for the water to drain. There was even a catfish swimming in the parking lot. For some, the water came up pretty high on their vehicles and they may have issues getting the started. There was also a lot of standing water down in the parking lot by building 15 of the Key West phases. Water was coming up through one of the storm drains. It didn't get as deep there and most of the cars should be fine but there was a small tree down on one of the cars. Mostly the resort is covered with tree debris and wood chips that washed out of the landscaping beds. Some of the buildings in the Bella phases have the metal that is around the soffits at the roof is torn off and laying on the ground. I think the Bella pool may have also flooded with some water from the lake as the water in that pool is green where the rest of the pools still have clear water. This is all small potatoes compared to the flooding in other areas in and around Orlando.

The water was reportedly higher earlier in the day by people I talked to while walking through.

It was great to talk with you while we waited for our villa. I hope you didn't have to wait six hours like I did? From what I understand, a lot of people came in to escape what was to greet them on the west coast. I talked with a couple people that evacuated to SVV.

Yes, it was nice meeting you too, Dioxide. I was assigned a 3rd floor villa by 5:30. I must say, I enjoyed my 4 days in the Bella section very much and would choose to stay there again. I felt terrible leaving early but my family was worried. Hope you are having a good time.

Dioxide45, thanks for sharing those photos. Just be safe.

It is important to point out that flooding is isolated. It isn't like the entire city of Orlando looks like this. Certainly isn't good for those impacted, but most areas of Orlando are not under water.

Good point. The media tends to show the worst photos. I do wonder what percent of Orlando experienced significant flooding.

We've been at Sheraton Vistana Resort since last Saturday and are due to fly out tomorrow on Delta. So far, this resort is in good standing from what we saw yesterday while going off property for food and water. There’s lots of water everywhere, so we were sure to get back before sunset so we could see the large areas of water in this area. As of now, Orlando airport is due to reopen today at noon. The resort was excellent in keeping us abreast of the conditions. There are many people still here at the resort. Delta didn’t notify us to leave ahead of the storm. So far, our flight tomorrow is on schedule. Safe travels to all!
Btw, we are so thankful that the resort didn’t lose power. I never leave home without my flashlight. I learned to keep it in my suitcase after we lost power in Maui several years ago.

Thanks for the update. Good to hear SVR was spared from much of this.

I have been wondering how the resorts held up.

Is the water safe to drink from the faucet?

Are you having a tough time finding bottled water?

I am not aware of any boil advisories. I am sure there are some in some places with flooding, but the resort areas seem to be fine for water from the tap. That said, the shelves were bare of bottled water on Tuesday before the storm. We try to buy bottled water anyway as the water in Orlando is kind of gross.

When things cleared up this morning, we did some more investigating. My previous comments pertained to the are to the right of the entry gate. However, we discovered the roadway going to the left from the entry was flooded with at least several inches of water, enough that we didn’t want to go through it. By chatting with front desk personnel, we found out the main pool had been flooded with lake water, and it was going to take a while to get the proper chemical balance achieved, so it will probably reopen tomorrow. Further, the bridge across the lake was flooded, so it is closed. A retention area next to our villa about 75% full yesterday, but it has drained fairly quickly and is now about half full. Resort personnel are working quickly to get most of the debris off the roads and sidewalks. So progress is being made.

We ventured off the resort earlier today, and things seemed fairly normal in terms of being able to get around. Some debris on/near the roads in the immediate area, but very few spots with water accumulation, and those were minor. We went as far as Disney Springs on back roads, and were happy to encounter no problems.

River Island at Orange Lake is closed . Severe damage there.

Boil water notice in Lee county, but no way to boil it, no electricity

Portable propane or gas camping stove. Probably some people must have generators. More of an advisory to not drink water from faucet without boiling it.

I am considering driving and bringing our own water. Our daughter suggested that we bring water. I don't think we can pack much water in suitcases.

Cancelling our trip would be an easy thing to do with Southwest because I used points for our flights.
