I would hope some American airlines follow suit. Yes, it is more expensive, but if you were to compare these prices with what it cost to fly at all in the '70's, adjusted for inflation, these prices are dead cheap.
 
Southwest is not selling all of the seats to keep the middle seats open. I would be willing to fly SW to Maui with the middle seat available. They wouldn't have to modify the planes, just don't sell more than 2/3 of the plane for any flight. Raise the price accordingly.
