Question for the ladies.

How much does it cost to have a Cut , Style, Blow, Hair color, and highlights for medium length hair?

Cost greatly vary depending on the salon and the general cost of living in the area - but...

$150 around here at an Aveda brand salon.

About $120-$150 at a top salon in my area. Far more in a top salon in LA or San Francisco.

I've been going to the same salon for several years. I get a haircut, highlights, blow-dry & style for $95, plus tip.

Wow! I know prices vary, but y'all are some high maintenance ladies  Or maybe it is me. I get a cut every four weeks and that's it. Couldn't get a dye to match my hair if I tried, so I decided to stay with God's color.

Fern

PS: Hey, at least I said ladies. Its late at night...

Wow! And I thought I spent a lot on skin creams!

My hair started falling out in my 20s. After that, I was too embarrassed to get my hair done professionally. So, it's been over 25 years since I've been to a hairdresser. (I guess I've saved a lot of money. :ponder: )

I've considered going back to a hairdresser -- maybe for a hairpiece or a weave -- but I don't really know where to begin. I don't know anyone with a weave who could make a referral for me. In fact, all the places around here that do weaves seem to be aimed at ethnic (African) hair, which is very different from my fine, wispy hair.

So, for the ladies that get highlights, etc. regularly, how often do you go to the beauty parlor? I'm wondering how many Disney trips my "hair-shyness" has paid for! :)

I go to a shop where there are new or semi-new graduates (they rent a chair)- costs me $15.00 for the cut plus tip. Then I buy a few boxes of hair color on Amazon that come on a schedule to my home through the subscribe and save program. All said and done under $30.00 every 3 months. If my bangs get a bit long in between I just cut them at home.

Good hair does not run in my family, which is why I DO go to professionals, rather than avoiding them. A good cut and style will give you the illusion of fuller hair, and good hair products will help your hair grow more healthfully, rather than clogging pores and causing hair fall out. Stress plays a factor too. I don't get my nails done (well, almost never), wear little makeup (which is expensive), and my skin care I buy cheaply, a product called Alba, which I can pick up at Kroger, WalMart, wherever. (fortunately, I did inherit good skin).

How much do I spend on my hair? Probably $150 for cut color, highlights and blow-dry. If you look good, you feel good.

I would suggest you see a dermatologist if you havent already. I was experiencing hair loss and thinning and the dermatologist was very helpful with ruling things out and getting to the root of my issue. With regard to getting a hair weave, if your hair is already thin and wiapy (regardless of ethnicity) a true "weave" is not likely to be a good solution for you. I would suggest clip in extensions (look on Amazon and find some that arent too expensive so that you can try them out). They are super simple to apply and will not add additional stress to your hair. I am African American and I only go to Dominican salons for my hair care. I have noticed folks of all ethnicities at the various Dominican salons I have been to. This made alot of since to me because Domincan hair ranges very widely from very thin to very very coarse and kinky. Since I made the transition to the Dominican salons I have fallen back in love with my hair again. They are also pretty cheap, my service runs from about $30 for a basic service to about $75 with cut and color. Another thing to be aware of is product selection, while Redken products are not marketed to the African American community their products work very well for my hair. The Diamond Oil products seem to work very well on all types of hair. I have several friends in love with the shampoo and conditioner who only tried it because they were tired of me raving about them...lol

I pay $60-$100 for cut and style.

Color or highlights would easily double the cost (and time).

Prices vary a lot depending on the salon and the area.

color, cut, style bout 60 plus tip

LOL Haircut here $18. I color my own with a $3 box. There are more expensive brands, but I have used this one for years with good results.

I spend $125-175 plus tip depending upon exactly what I have done, and go about every 4 weeks because my hair grows fast. I don't have a good sense myself of what styles would work for me, so found a good stylist about 20 years ago and have stayed with her ever since. Her cuts work, so that even I can get them styled myself. I consistently get compliments on my hair, and I know it's because of her skills, not mine!

She's been with me through the process of hiding gray with color and highlights, to transitioning to my natural white with blonde highlights. A good stylist makes color look natural, and not something you recognize as "colored hair." It's worth every penny to me.

$95 for just a color, $125 for a color and cut. My hairdresser and I are friends from way back and she's also a client of mine. Her shop is in the city but we live in the same town so every four weeks she comes to my home to do my hair, when she'll also drop off any work she has for me. It's a great arrangement! The last I knew the prices at the shop were $115 and $145 although they've probably gone up since then, but she won't tell me the current prices and won't take any more than what I'm paying now.

My hair is strong and healthy but started turning gray when I was only 28! She colors it back to its natural color, and I'll keep letting her do it until I feel comfortable with being a gray lady - not there yet. :D

Billy, why are you asking? Is there a correct answer and a prize for who guesses it?

$170 plus tip in the Chicago area. I actually think this is a mid-range price. I question this myself but it's one of the things I can control and feels good to have good hair.

Deb

In Waltham, Massachusetts:

I pay $85.00 for a wash, color, blow-dry.

It's $115.00 for a wash, color, cut, blow dry.

Tip is extra.

I have no highligts to speak of, just 2 mixed colors with a splash of something. Maybe that's a highlight.

I then go home and install electric curlers to tame the unruly mop perched on my head.

I go to a hairdressing school, about $45 for a colour and I get about four foils at $5 each. Runs about 40 for a cut at a different place, I won't let students cut my hair. My hair is really short and really gray so it's about every five weeks for me.

In Santa Fe I'm paying $130 (plus tip) for trim, color and blow dry. When he does a "full" color (every couple of months) it's more. This is more than I was paying in California, but there I'd been going to the same gal for years and she never raised her price on me.

Gosh - I never realized how much I have been saving. Right after I retired, we moved to a small town in the Ozarks and I could not find anyone who cut my hair half as well as the gal who had cut my hair for several years, so I started doing it myself. When we moved again, I tried two hairdressers and they did not do as good of a job as I did, and charged $35-$40 for just a cut, so I went back to doing my own. I can tell by how it feels when running my fingers through it when a spot does not match the rest. Last month at the beach in Mazatlán, I trimmed it a little shorter each week, so it is shorter than normal right now, but looks pretty good. I had several people compliment me on it at church yesterday. I am fortunate that I have great hair that is thick with a lot of body.

As for highlights, I use the Loreal frosting kit and hubby pulls strands through. I have medium blond hair that has some natural gray "highlights", so we just need to add some lighter strands every 3-4 months to keep it looking how I like it. So, I spend about $45 per year for 4 frosting kits.

I did go to a dermatologist when my hair first started falling out, and he said there was really nothing to be done about it; I could try using Rogaine but it probably wouldn't do much. (Which has, in fact, been my experience with Rogaine -- I use it, but at best it just keeps the thinning from getting worse.)

I have tried clip-in extensions, but my hair has curls (like, wispy curls) to it. None of the extensions I've found have a similar texture, so they look very unnatural. I'm really not good with curling irons and other curling techniques, but maybe I could try setting the clip-ins with small hot rollers and see if that makes them more like the texture of my own hair.

I checked for Dominican salons and couldn't find any in my town.

Diamond Oil sounds nice; I will look for it. (Maybe at Sally Beauty?)

If I thought I could find someone who would actually make my hair look better, I'd be happy to pay the $150. I think a big part of the problem is I couldn't find a stylist who worked well for me even back before my hair started falling out. They would always try to beat the curl out of my hair with hot tools, and after I left (often the same day, it it was humid) my hair's natural wave would re-assert itself and the hairstyle would look all wrong. I could never duplicate the hairstyle at home.

The dermatologist I saw didn't think that stress or clogged pores were a problem. He said the hair loss was genetic and hormonal.

I actually think the hairstyle I have now isn't that bad. I wear my hair shoulder-length (the sides and back still grow long; only the crown and front are skimpy), and parted on the side. I cover up the thin spots with a product called Rita Hazan Root Concealer -- I've tried at least a dozen cover-ups for thin hair, and this is the one I like best. It covers gray as well as thin spots (it's actually designed to cover gray roots.) It's messy, though, so I'd like to find a more permanent approach.

By Alba skincare, do you mean Alba Botanica? I like their mineral sunscreen!

I found someone that cuts my hair the way I like. I keep it short, and am fighting turning brown from my childhood blonde. I have a few cowlicks. Hair grows fast. Minimal grey at 50, so that is not the issue. I have very fine hair, but thankfully I have a lot of it. It dries fast and it usually dries before she is finished cutting it. Have to spray it down to wet it again.

I get a cut, highlights and lowlights, blow and style. It probably takes 2.5 to 3 hours. It takes a lot of time for a full head of foils and high and low lights.

Charge $105 plus tip. Get it cut every 2 to 3 months. Usually when it gets too long and starts to annoy me, with the ends starting to get wispy curls that drive me crazy. It varies in time usually based on my schedule NOT on my desire. Luckily I have someone who to fit me in whenever possible.

This is a private, rent a chair place, and not a chain salon.

$27 for just a cut, $47 for cut & style, $95 for color and cut. I thought that was expensive but I guess it's cheap compared to what a lot of the rest of you are paying. I do my own coloring. $5 vs $50 is a no brainer to me.
