Fees, Bonus Points and Partner Perks...

So, when did this whole "bonus points" thing start??

I've owned resale (thanks, Seth N!!) for 7 years or so. I just phoned up to find out details about exchanging points for a Moorings Yacht Charter certificate.

The point ratio is fairly awful to begin with... 10:1, as in 5000 HGVC points gets you a $500 voucher. I was willing to live with that (even though when you think of it, it means that if I use my entire year's worth of points, the dollar value I get doing this is *less* than what I'm paying in maint fees).

But then, there's an $84 transaction fee?? PER certificate?!? AND, he tried to make me feel good about that by letting me know that many partner programs can *only* be bought with bonus points, but out of the goodness of their hearts, they are letting me use my club points for a "small" transaction fee??

I've liked HGVC, but things seem to be going downhill fast. How does one get these magical bonus points? Is this a construct that HGVC has invented against the resale market?

HGVC has long used the award of bonus points to entice retail buyers to close a sale.
Along with HHonors points, they are 'sposed to make buyers think they got a good deal.

Existing owners can earn bonus points by getting a "friend" to buy from HGVC direct.
Sort'a like the award one gets for the arrest + conviction of a fugitive criminal.
... which is what your "friend" will feel like for being referred to the sales staff.

I love the analogy. with enemys like that who needs friends!
As a retail buyer (why is it that we find TUG afterwe buy) I can assure you that I would relinquish them all in exchange for a 2nd chance at recision! Or at least HGVC should award occassional bonus points to us suckers erh i mean valued retail purchasers to prop up our self esteem
