Fall New England Info

We are hoping to plan a trip to New England this fall sometime during October and would really appreciate hearing from those of you who have had a good experience with a resort and surrounding areas.

try Berkshires, Vermont

I like the Berkshires in the fall, Bentley Brook is a good base... also Vermont. Try a place in Stowe if you can and ride route 100 very pretty. Or stay at a ski resort like a Killington or a Sugarbush and drive around. Check out the Yankee magazine web site for fall foliage colors etc...

Nerodog's suggestions are good. As you might image, the foliage season tends to run sequentially from the north to the south and the timing of full color from area to area can be a little unpredictable - as can the intensity of color. Rainfall amounts during the summer and early fall temperatures - among other weather-related issues - contribute to the richness, or lack of richness, of fall color.

The Vermont mountain route that Nero mentioned - Route 100 - runs from near the Canadian border hugging the Green Mountains almost to Massachusetts. For other northern New England areas, both Maine and New Hampshire offer similarly stunning foliage views - as does New England's neighbor through the Adirondack's of New York. The Berkshire's in western Massachusetts are roughly the continuation of Vermont's Green Mountain range and are absolutely beautiful in full foliage as well.

Vermont's timeshares are small in number - look to Sugarbush, Smugglers, Trapp Family in Stowe, Killington and I'm certain that there's a resort in the southern Vermont mountains, but I can't remember its name. Several resorts in the Berkshires, several in the New Hampshire mountains and a few in Maine. Check out the TUG reviews.

It depends what you want to do on your October visit. We are hikers. You can't beat the numerous trails available in the White Mountains on New Hampshire. For best foliage, think the first 2-3 weeks of October, depending how far north you are. Columbus Day weekend is slightly beyond peak generally in NH, but still pretty. Hiking is harder on leave covered trails. Most tourist sites close on or before Columbus Day.

Read TUG reviews on the timeshares. We didn't like the new Bentley Brook units mentioned in the earlier post due to being too "formal" and close to each other, etc. We preferred the older Jiminy Peak units. Cozy, worn but comfortable. For non-hikers, the Berkshires was nice due to tours at the Edith Warton? mansion, Norman Rockwell Museum, Williams College art museums, etc. Also has hikes. NH doesn't have many tourist sites like those.

Camden Maine area and Bar Harbor are scenic but would be cold.

If you are not into only foliage, Boston has lots to do for a week with excursions, but probably no openings. Cape Cod would have vacancies if you don't want to do much but walk the beach and read. Newport, RI has cool mansions to tour, a waterfront. Connecticut has various attractions, which would be listed in any AAA guide. Ct has 2 casinos.

So for a NE October visit, concentrate on what you want to do, not getting a specific "hot" resort base because your activities will not be at the resort.
