Resorts Owned
Sands of Kahana
Hello, a family member will be using our 2 bedroom unit in Hawaii. The unit sleeps six and family member wants to bring a blow up bed to sleep 7. Has anyone had any experience with this?

If the resort is not all inclusive or offer activites that requires a wristband, I would say this is no big deal.

It may be uncomfortable but will be doable.

Room occupancy limits are based on fire codes in most places.
I once remember checking into a resort in CA where there was a big commotion at the front desk because the group exceeded occupancy of the room and were told they couldn't all stay.

I have never had a head count at check in though - so unless it is obvious I would assume it would go unknown by the resort.

I think a phone call to the desk would be more informative than posting the inquiry here- and certainly better than being evicted after trying to sneak a 7th person in. And MAYBE if the extra person is a small child, they can provide a roll-away or crib.

For the most part, no one is really checking occupancy unless the entire group checks in together or causes a problem.

Bill

I can't imagine how the resort would ever know whether there are 6 or 7 in the room, unless they are all crowding around the check-in desk.

I almost never hear of this happening.

I have seen it happen twice at different times! Both times at our own resort as we were checking in. I believe both parties were exchangers, but could have been renting. The resort has strict occupancy limits due to local fire and municipal laws. The resort has their maintenance workers out in the front area of the resort where folks park while they check in. That area is not visible from the front desk but it is from the area in front of the desk. The maintenance guys will radio to the front desk 'white mini-van, 2 adults, 3 kids on board' or whatever the count is. When people are checking in they need to fill out the make & model of the car for their parking tag. If the guest has reserved a 1 bedroom (occ. 4) and there is 5 or more in their vehicle they are questioned by the front desk staff. If the extra body is a very small child they are sometimes allowed. The last time we witnessed it there were 4 adults and 2 children (8-10 yrs old?) checking into a 1 bedroom with occupancy 4. Just a man and woman went to the front desk and staff asked about the number of people staying in the unit and the man said just he and his wife. The desk clerk asked where all the others in his vehicle were going to stay. They were told to either cancel their stay or send the over flow to a hotel. I dont know what they ended up doing but the man didnt seem very pleased.

I really have no way of knowing whether the resort even cares about occupancy, but it seems to me that rather than risk a vacation, it would be better to know what to expect.

Back in my days of providing transportation to trade shows, in NYC, we would take a hotel room with 2 queen beds and take the beds apart and sleep 4- (or more) drivers in a room while we worked the Javits Center. I'm no stranger to 'stretching' accommodations.

Hmmm definitely seems odd that they would try to fit so many people in such a small room! However just bc there were 5 people in the vehicle doesn’t mean all 5 would stay in their room. Some families travel together to save on costs but book separate rooms. So their logic of having x amount of people on the car doesn’t necessarily pan out.

Well there were actually 6 people in the van and as we were leaving the desk we heard the man saying the kids were sleeping on air mattresses so he didn't think they counted since they weren't using a bed! When we talked to the girl at the desk, who we have come to know quite well over the years, she said that happens all the time and that's why they have resorted to using the maintenance staff to watch the check-in and unloading area (special parking spots right near the elevator) on check-in day.

True - but I would assume all it takes is that answer when the front desk inquires "we have two room" or "those 3 are staying at a resort down the street"

My home resort for many years was very strict about the policy. People who tried to sneak an extra person received a call from manager.
one thing I wonder about, you book a unit for six, only one parking spot allowed, but you cannot fit six in the car.

You can with a full size SUV.

I wouldn’t be surprised if people who think it’s fine to sleep six people in a room for four also think it’s okay to take two parking spaces. Or to ride with six people in a car that only has 5 seatbelts.

And mini vans, they seat 7 (with seat belts) but not much room for luggage. Our Chevy Astro Van seats 8 and has more room for luggage than the Chrysler minivan -one of the reasons we bought it. The other big reason was that it can tow a lot more than the Chrysler or other makes, and isnt subject to the same transmission issues as the Chrysler/Dodge ones.
