Exchange Question

I'm new to trading in II with a Marriott/weeks basis (KBC - DRI club points previously) so I appreciate the help here!

I have a reservation my 3br MPB for July 2016. I'm still debating if we'll use it or trade (and lock-off or not). When searching the instant inventory in II, I'm able to select the studio, 2br, or 3br to use while searching - and I see different inventory especially with the studio, as expected. Here's my question - if I find something I want while just searching the instant inventory selecting the studio or 2br, can I exchange for it and then do the lock-off with my existing 3br reservation (I'd lock-off the same week so no inventory issues on my side) to finalize? Or do I have to call MVC to split the unit first, then re-search in II hoping the week I found was still there?

It's a timing question on both sides to me. If I don't see anything that I want in daily instant searches, I might just keep/use the 3br MPB (so I don't want to lock-off yet). But if I see something, selecting the 2br or studio with a dummy res. # I want to be able to book (so as not to lose it) - just not sure if this works or if I must lock-off and search with that res. # to be able to start the exchange in II. Does the question make sense?

Thanks all!

You can search with a 'fake' reservation number to see what you can see.

Before you can exchange, you'll need to:

  • Have Marriott lock-off, book, deposit (as desired) OR
not the best choice--reserve a high TDI week(s) and deposit yourself.
  • Have Marriott lock-off. Make your own ressies (same or diff weeks); select reserve and deposit.
  • Go to interval to exchange or search or just deposit.
No, you can't deposit/exchange the studio without locking off first.
Hope that helps.

In order to use II, you need a reservation number. Your current reservation is for a 3 BR. You would have to get Marriott to lock off your unit and get separate ressies in order to trade the one you want.

You do realize that what you see on-line are the "leftovers" after II has filled ongoing requests.

If you're looking for a highly desirable week, you will need to put in an ongoing request. Of course, this would mean you have to decide if you want to deposit the full 3 bedroom, or lock-off and deposit both sides or just one and keep the other to occupy for yourself. Lots of decisions..

And of course....

You can only search for "like" units in II. If you lock-off, you can only search for "Studio with studio" etc... unless the resort has none.

You may be offered other matches.

In the Flextrades (<59 days) you can instant match anything you see.
No OGS on eplus, just instant.

I advice lock-off unless you're searching for super-tough, peak period matches. Book a backup and eplus into a better fit.

Added above for clarity.

Thanks everyone! I have a much better understanding. I have an OGS with the 3Br MPB (July 2 week) requesting for a 2 Br MMO or MM1 and time from Jan to July 2016. Are my chances any better this way rather than locking off (same week) and using the 2Br for the OGS, leaving me free to trade the studio for something else?

Your chances are better using 3BR, but others may agree you have a decent chance using only the 2BR.

I agree. With a 6-7 month window I would go with the 2bdr option. Some don't like the value of efficiencies but they can be good for short lead time travel when restrictions are removed and for shoulder/off season. That said, I suppose it depends on your level of urgency for a confirmation. The 3bdr will be even more sure of a sure thing and will confirm sooner allowing you to book your airline tickets.
