I am finding out more and more that the exchange game is getting more and more too expensive.
Staying at my own resort is the way to go. Plus you are not waiting for someone else's timeshare to drop on the hold.

Exchange company's what?

The cost sometimes is out of control.
Adding the maintenance and the exchange fee plus the daily hotel fee.
Can take the enjoyment out of trip.

This might be a situation to consider the TUG direct exchanges - I wish I could really figure it out myself. I too think the exchange fees can be insane, but what makes it worse are the resort fees. Here's where I do think the point systems shine though - using my RCI points I can easily get 2-3 exchanges out of my $1,000 MF, so by driving down that part of the cost, it can be reasonable when adding in all the other fees. That said, the II full week exchanges I have are only compelling if I'm stepping up into a Marriott or the like from my third party resort when I also add in the exchange fee.

I wish some exchanges would go to a subscription model or have higher annual fees but much lower individual exchange fees. $300 for an exchange in the ai/information era seems very high. That said, there are times exchanging is still a great value.

I've said this for a long time, but clearly the consolidation in the timeshare companies mini systems doesn't really let someone start up a competitor. I think the issue is the resorts and everyone are charging through the nose for exchanges. Otherwise you can't do an deposit and then someone else uses the deposit later on because without the resorts the scam / trust issue is obvious. With TUG, you can sort of trust other TUGgers as well as I think it's "real time" in that you both swap the guest confirmations or call off the transaction.

I have heard some things I like about how Vacatia intends for their owner plus program to work and they should have some scale coming now that they have Vacation Village coming into their system.

I also have hopes over time HGV will build DEX out to be a larger standalone exchange competing with RCI and II.

I've sort of hoped for DEX but I don't see HGV really integrating it - they're pushing Max. And I guess I'm not sure if they have much incentive to. I actually think we'd need someone from outside the TS industry, sort of like AirB&B, to really put downward pricing pressure, or at least someone NOT owned by a Timeshare company / system.
