Exception to Sticky above about Renting

How to confirm that a rental is legit:

First step - ALWAYS ask if they are renting an exchange. RCI* and II do not allow exchanges to be rented, and if you get caught, you can lose the rental and your $$$. You can tell if it is an exchange, when they send you a copy of their confirmation, because it will be a confirmation from the exchange company, not directly from the resort.


This is not always the case. If you own an RCI Points week, and you choose to use your home resort week, you book it through RCI (12 months out.) There is no charge since it it your ownership week, but the process is completed through RCI. If you choose to rent your week at that point, the guest certificate would be issued legitimately through RCI.
This was my experience about 5 years ago. I bought a Ca coastal week that had previously been made into a Points week. The week was far more valuable as a rental or for personal use. I booked my home resort week twice, and found the process rather galling... that I had to book 12 months out in a small window and request a guest cert for a fixed week that I owned. Eventually, I pulled this week out of Points.
This is a rare circumstance, but possible.:)

Even weeks enrolled in points vary. Some resorts choose to turn over all reservation responsibility for points owners to RCI inventory to manage including home weeks (either float or fixed), for these resorts the confirmation would come from RCI and it would require a Guest Cert. Owners reserving home weeks do not pay for the Guest certs.

Other resort do not turn over the points weeks inventory to RCI until after the home week period has passed. At those resorts the home week confirmation would come from the resort/resort's management company and it would not go through RCI.

The point is that an RCI confirmation may not mean that it is an exchange that can not be rented out. If an owner claims that this is the case for their rental you may want to then verify the ownership another way.

I understand your point - but this is the problem: Nearly every person who is straight out renting RCI exchanges makes the same claim - that they have the "right" to do so.

So adding that exception to the sticky, will only make the recommendations more confusing.

So if you are a renter, or an owner, who is legitimately renting an RCI reservation, you will have to use other methods to verify whether it is Legit or not.

I suppose a conference call to RCI might do the trick?

Showing a copy of the deed with the fixed week at that particular resort or a float week in that season at that particular resort plus a print screen of the RCI points page showing that the day that the unit was reserved (prior to 12 months before check in during the home week reservation period).

Any exception would make it quite confusing.

There are similar situations with other companies. Reservations for my fixed week at the Jockey Club were confirmed utilizing forms indicating Platinum Interchange was confirming my "exchange" with no fee charged. The forms clearly state the "exchange" cannot be rented. However, it is never a problem to have the confirmation issued in the name of the person renting the week so that should alleviate any concerns for a renter.

I would think RCI could do something similar with the name on the confirmation when renting is truly an option.

This makes sense. You have helpful advice, and exceptions muddy the message.
And, this situation is a rare one.
