End of year convert points to HHonors, Pitfalls?

Isn't converting your left over points to HHonors a really good idea? The conversion rate is pretty good.

I understand one buys the points to use in the resorts but having 1,000 or so points left over should be put to good use right?

Isn't the conversion fee fairly reasonable also?

The conversion rate isn't really that good in my opinion. It is 25:1. I have converted a couple times because I wasn't going to stay in a timeshare. However, the conversion happens the year before your points are awarded. If you are looking at converting 2016 points, you needed to do that by December 31, 2015. I think the fee is $76. or $99. depending on how you do it (phone, online, automatic).

You can book a hotel stay with those points in the current year at an even lower conversion rate. It would be 20:1.

1,000 HGVC points converted to Hhonors is 25,000 Hhonors points. The rooms I stay in general take 50,000 Hhonors points/night. So, it wouldn't be worth it to me to pay $76. or $99. to convert for 1/2 night's credit. I would either bank the points in HGVC/RCI or let them expire.

No way is it a good deal, you get better bang for the buck depositing in RCI if you have to extend points, assuming they have already been rescued from a prior year and they are expiring.

I booked 3 nights in a studio W57th NYC for 720 pts using RCI, try getting a hotel in NYC for three night with hhonors points.

Oh.... I see I thought you would take your remaining 1,000 points in december you couldn't use and convert them instead of losing them.

So the better solution is banking them I guess..

In general i agree with Presley and SmithOP.

However, i would convert them to HHonors points rather than go to waste if you really don't have any other plans..

While conversation by itself is not a great value, it better than nothing.. And in particular if you already have a bunch HHonnors points to combine these with, and these put you over the top for a bigger trip then great...

1000 points are worth rescuing (moving to the next year) as HGVC points. If you dont use them in the following year then deposit into RCI for an additional year.

We can book RCI weeks (full weeks) or points (nightly stay) inventory. To view only points change the duration of stay on the left side to search 6 nights or less. It defaults to 7 nights. Short RCI stays are a great way to use up these small leftover point amounts.

Again, you cannot convert 2016 points, unless you use Peabody's "wayback machine" to return to the year 2015. Between now and 12/31/16, you can only convert 2017 points which will post the 1st week in January 2017.

And no, it is a notoriously poor use of points. IMHO, the only reason to do it is if you have some special trip planned and need a just few more HH-points to make it completely free.

Its far more efficacious to Rescue or Deposit to RCI.

Only time I ever did that was to top of points requirements needed for a 10 night stay in Maldives. That took a chunk of points. I had most through hotel stays but I needed a bit more to get me to the 10 nights.
