Email saying I purchased points but I did not

Did anyone else get an email this morning saying they purchased points???

Unless I was sleepwalking, I didn't do it. Doesn't seem like "real fraud" as the points appear to be going into my account (no one else would benefit).

Sent an inquiry via the website .... hope it was just some sort of computer fluke.

It could be possible that someone bought points and the customer service rep fat fingered the MR number when they entered the purchase in their computer. Someone out there is probably wondering where their points are.

Just checked and I got one too ... that I purchased 99,000 pts and my credit card has been deducted for the purchase. Haven't time right now to check, but I'm sure it's an error as the $990 price is incorrect because the buy price is $0.0125 per point ... or $1237.50 total.

My account did show 220,000 pts added to my account in Nov but they were for trading in 2 weeks I wasn't using to get the points, so I knew about that and did it over the phone anyways.

Don't click on any link in that email btw, just in case if gives some hacker confirmation of something.

We received the same e-mail: that we purchased 99,000 MR points for $990.

Which we didn't.

Wow! That's shocking! I can't believe they charged your CC! Has anyone called about this?

Maybe this is Marriott's creative way of funding delinquent maintenance fees! :D

But has anyone's CC actually been charged? It may just be a phishing attempt. Though I don't know why anyone would want to get access to a MR account. Perhaps to initiate a transfer of points to another account?

I think Brian may need to clarify though. I think the e-mail indicated the amount of points and that the CC had been charged. Not really a charge to a CC just the e-mail trying to provoke someone in to clicking a link. I could be wrong, Brian will have to verify.

Another thing to note is that you can't even purchase 99000 points. They limit you to only 50K points each year.

I agree this has got to be scam since several people got the same e-mail...

Or a big booboo by Marriott.

Gigantic! No email here and the account looks okay, but I'd be calling Marriott immediately if it happened. Which I'm sure has been done already by you guys - what have they said? Did they already know about this mess?

I received the same email. I called the credit card company and the $990 has not been charged. I'll watch it for the next few days.

They did have my correct Marriott reward number.

I'll check with Marriott on Monday (busy weekend) but if they are selling the points for 1 cent a point, I'll buy the 99,000! :)

Brian

I figured I would call on Monday if an "oops, we apologize for the error" email didn't arrive before then. But, I also sent an inquiry via the website. I might have clicked the link ... but it looked legit .

Absolutely. If this wasn't a Marriott mailing and they have our MR ID numbers there certainly has been a breach of security. Wonder if they have your cc numbers too!

This happened a few years back at Marriott over a lost backup tape and caused them a great deal of legal problems as the cc numbers and names were involved. I don't know if anthing bad ever happened or if they were actually stolen but just the fact it happened is concerning. Marriott suggested that you cancel/change your CC numbers and paid for customers to get credit reports, etc.

Brian

I'll waive my right to complain if they let me keep the 99,000 points and credit my credit card for the (supposed) charge. :D

Has anyone checked Flyertalk? They probably know more, but that place scares me! :ignore:

Asked to Change Password

I wonder what is up? I received an email this week asking me to complete step 4 of 5 to change my owners password. The email said that I requested the change, but I did not. I deleted the email and went directly to the Marriott site and changed my password on that site just to be safe. I wonder if there has been an "escape" of owner information???

Did this happen to anyone else?

Hey Denise, I thought all the deadbeats  were on the Starwood board??

I haven't seen this mentioned over on FlyerTalk. Maybe whoever found/has that backup tape is using it now. It was a MVCI tape that was lost. We didn't get the e-mail others did, and that tape breach happened before we were owners.

I got an email today saying my purchase of 70,000 points have been charged to my credit card for $700. I didn't order any points. Marriott Rewards phone lines are closed until Monday so I called the number on my Visa. No charge that they can see. I looked to compare the email to past emails I've gotten from MR for points purchases. Today's email has web links that begin with https//: which is unlike other emails I've received from Marriott Rewards with links beginning with http//: I'm not a computer wiz but this is one apparent difference.

This may be a phishing email and I'll call MR on Monday to find out.

Just thought I mention it here as a warning to others. Then I found this thread and now it really looks more like a scam than a mistake by MR. Before I posted here I just made a post on the Marriott section on flyertalk.

Ours was some of the credit information that was compromised a few years ago. For a year we had a free service paid by Marriott to watch credit fraud.

An https would be a more secure protocol than http. Though who knows these days, even hackers can use secured web sites. What is the actual we address that it links to?

.

Any phishing stuff I've had didn't have my account number tied to my email address. This sounds like an inside job. But if the charges haven't been made to the credit cards and the points not posted, what would be the point of it all but to embarass Marriott. Maybe some misguided former employee has the files. The mystery continues...

Let us know what you find out on Monday. I didn't get the email (or any new points in my account). It concerns me that the emails have your MR account number & a correct email address.

A post over on FlyerTalk mentions Points.com as a possible tie. Did those who received the e-mail also have a Points.com account?

I have a points.com account but have never used it ... probably have never registered my marriott account.

Off topic: Maybe I just don't get it (very possible!), but points.com seems like a ripoff to me. If anyone can point me to a reference guide along the lines of "how to make it work for you," I'd really appreciate it.
