Up until two days ago I was getting dozens of emails in my focused and other email folders. I noticed that only one email in the last two days went to my focused folder and several to the other folder. I did send an email from my wife's phone to my email and it did make it to my email. I did change my password. It just seems odd to not have so few emails.

I was hacked. It looks like my email rules were changed for certain emails. After changing the password new emails started coming in. I did contact ic3 and an IT. This all happened after going to a Wyndham presentation . I'm not saying it is Wyndham but it could be one of their reps doing this. If so I hope ic3 finds them.

Did you see any black helicopters in the parking lot?:LOL::LOL:

Nope, it was raining today. I kid you not, a day after an unpleasant presentation that had about four guys making sure I left, my email had a problem. I'm thinking you are thinking it's not likely. Maybe it's the Russians, lol.

Bill,

Why/when did you change your password in relation to this issue? What is ic3, who is your email service with?

I changed it this morning. I didn't see any changes to my email rules which is mostly used to send spam to my junk folder. I did notice new emails showing up in both the focused and other new mail folders today. I use a few email providers. The one I think hacked is for travel and friends and is Microsoft.

ic3 is where I filed a complaint which for me was more of a report = https://www.ic3.gov/

How do you know you were hacked? What app do you use to check your email. In one post you state "It looks like my email rules were changed for certain emails." In another you say " I didn't see any changes to my email rules..." So it is impossible to follow this.

Something is definitely wrong as all of my in box have disappeared this morning.

I had an IT look at my email. The emails disappeared but did come back. The IT said that it's most likely a Microsoft issue after looking at down detector. @CO skier , you might be right about me being a bit paranoid when things don't line up. I think of it as being jaded more than being paranoid. Things are what they are.

Tech problems are the worst I tell you!

My son in law is the head IT for a big company and is on this trip so my problems became his problem. Problem solved for now.

I'm glad you got this resolved. Reporting this to the Cyber Crimes unit was probably a good move, though I think that mostly helps with tracking issues that help with your specific case.

There is not enough information here to really tell, but having email rules changed or added mysteriously can be a sign that your account has been compromised. Usually, this is part of a more significant attempt to access your other accounts. Basically, gain access to your email, figure out your bank, social media, or other accounts, and, gain access to those. They can use the rules changes to hide the emails and services they are trying to gain access to.

Or, as others mentioned, it could be a technical issue with your email service provider.

I had something similar happen to a Yahoo email account years ago. Account was compromised and they added an auto-forward email to the account. I started receiving a bunch of email bounce-backs and discovered it was due to the forward email address being no longer valid. The account was actually compromised months before this and they wiped out all the points in a MyPoints account. I didn't discover the forwarding issue until months later. So, even though I updated the password in the email account, they were still getting all the emails. They never compromised any other accounts other than MyPoints, but they could have easily used it to gain access to some of our financial accounts. Most important thing ever is using different passwords for every website.

Chrome says I have over 250 passwords. I looked at the password manager and didn't realize that I had joined so many websites over the years. I probably use about 20 websites that are mostly for travel and online purchases but occasionally do go to some of those other websites.

That's a good reminder to go and clean out old passwords every once in a while.

Ah, so it was entirely appropriate to call you out for your 2+2=16 baseless Wyndham-paranoid involvement. At least we got that much straightened out, and Wyndham had nothing to do with it.

I wouldn't say baseless regarding any group as this was the first time all of my emails disappeared and I didn't know why. You calling me an idiot paranoid conspiracy wack job was a bit over the top on you end.

My IT didn't rule anything out but does say that down detector showed many people had Microsoft email issues. Being that I don't really know why my emails disappeared but came back after changing the password I'm checking them a few times a day.

Many password managers, such as 1Password, Google, etc., will help identify weak and reused passwords.

I know I used some weak or reused passwords early on, and your credentials for sites you don't even use anymore can be a potential weakness. When I changed PW managers a while back, I went through all the older sites and changed the PW or, if possible, closed my accounts.

Yes, that is what I like about Chrome, that it will warn me of some compromised passwords (mostly on sites I have not used for a while). Norton is also good at finding compromised passwords they found on the " dark web" that I may have used in the past.
