I spent one hour with turbo tax agent, she could not make it work
Waiting for a corrected w2 from a university so asking for an extension.
This is my son’s return. Icannot complete the return until I get more information from them, specifically my daughter in law. She has four five hour exams this week for her PhD

I get to the part on the 1040, using TurboTax deluxe, and ask for extension, and it asks you to print and gives you an address, but no option to efile. The agent could not get to the efile link either. I will mail it but would like to efile. The IRS page says to efile through your tax software, but it isn’t happening.
I haven’t even started on the state returns yet.

We had major problems last year, and the university corrected the w2 for 2023 in January 2025, so had to file amended returns to federal and two states. To this date, Maryland has still not refunded taxes, still sends letters demanding more information from 2023 return, even though they have multiple copies of the information they asked for.

Is there anyone who has had success veiling for an extension using turbo tax software

I tried this too and don't know if there is a way to eFile an extension through the desktop software. I had to do it through their online TurboTax system. Still free and got an email a few hours later indicating the extension was approved.

I would recommend just making an extension payment. You can file Form 4868 payment (even if it is just a $10 estimated tax payment) which will automatically file the extension.

"By making a 4868 payment, you are applying for an automatic 6-month extension of time to file your individual income tax return. Generally, this extension also extends the time to file Form 709."

There are two processors as of 2025.

https://www.pay1040.com/payment/personal (choose Form 4868 Automatic extension to file)

Obligatory I'm not a tax advisor.....

Thank you. Will try it this morning

Success CericRushmore. Do I need to do anything about the Massachusetts return or is that automatic with the federal return.
I do so appreciate your help.

I filed an extension Saturday using the Turbo Tax Web site. Got an email verifying it was accepted by the IRS less than 24 hours later. .

Totally unable to do so
Today I called again when despite clicking just file an extension it would stop on transmit form.
This agent found the link to go to state agency and the only way was to give them some form of payment
What I discovered is that I had to go to irs site and pay them something and to Massachusetts site and pay them something and I got extension but no go through turbo tax

I wonder if it was because he didn’t owe taxes that it would not go through
First time I ever filed for an extension.

I don't have state income taxes in Florida, so no issue there but for federal I know I wouldn't have any additional taxes due but was still able to file a federal extension through my account on the TurboTax website.

Why not just get TT to print the extension request and mail it yourself? You can "guesstimate" what the corrected W2 will be to generate the appropriate state extension request.

I can’t understand why the turbo tax agents couldn’t help me to do this.

I did print it to mail in. It’s just a small slip , you cut the bottom off the paper and mail it in. But I feel better getting a notice that it was received .

I also just went to the TT website and started an online return. Did not input anything, but was able to get to the file an extension option and it went through.

Yeah, that's what I did for years.

From now on, I'm going to just file an extension in February after I've estimated what my amount due should be (if any).

If you mail it, send it USPS First Class Mail (stamp) with Certificate of Mailing. This is proof that you sent it to the IRS address and is considered legal proof of mailing. Just keep the postmarked slip, Form 3817, as your proof.

Sorry, just seeing this now. You would have needed to also file a state extension if you wanted one. Obligatory, I'm not a tax advisor.

The requirement to file a state extension will vary by state, but I understand that most states don't require an extension to be filed when you've also filed a federal extension. A situation where you need to file a state extension also is if you expect to owe taxes as you would then be required to also pay those taxes by the filing deadline. This is probably why the OP had to pay something when filing for the state extension.

Agree.
Taxes are due & payable by 4/15 (for federal & state)
Filing tax return can be extended for 6 mo, free, by 4868, by paying a minimal payment through any of the e-processors online. I do it every year, easy peasy, takes 1 minute to do...

Key phrase, paying a minimal payment
Funny thing is, I originally had it set up to pay a minimal payment and the turbo tax agents had me change it to not paying a payment. From then on, the file an extension button stopped working

I never use TurboTax for doing an extn (or paying any taxes through them); + markup with TT (esp with using their 'agents' or using CC to make a payment to IRS through them)

Use this linky to pay with CC or Debit card or VanillaDirect...
