I have never been there before. Is May too early to go there? What will the weather be like? Am I better off in the Outer Banks?

We've been to both Outer Banks and Edisto Island. I think it depends so much on what you like to do. Edisto Island is very quiet and laid back. Not very touristy at all. Great for nature lovers, golf lovers, and beach lovers. If you're staying at the Fairfield Ocean Ridge, the condos come with bikes, and you can ride everywhere. We don't golf, but the golf course looked really nice. There are some good restaurants but very little in the way of shopping or any other commercial activity. Edisto is just 45 minutes from Charleston, so if you want shopping, culture, history, and even more good restaurants, it's close at hand. Savannah is a couple of hours away and is well worth the trip.

There are a lot more activities available on the Outer Banks; it's also more crowded and more touristy.

We enjoyed both, but for different reasons.

Been to OBX (Barrier Island Station Kitty Hawk) in May and Edisto (Egrets Pointe Townhomes) in April.

Personally, I preferred Edisto as it remains unspoiled. It is a drive to the mainland but daytrips to Charleston, Beaufort & Savannah are easily done. Weather was comparable despite the couple weeks calendar difference- perhaps because Edisto is further south?

Even in May, many OBX restaurants weren't open. It's not beach weather either. We did enjoy seeing the lighthouses, taking the Ocracoke ferry and Kitty Hawk there.

I've gone to that area in May, and the weather is rather unpredictable. Its about 68 to 72 degrees.

You won't be sorry going to Edisto Island. They have very good planned activities if you so choose. We did the bus trip to Charleston and the shelling trip was great. Also don't forget to do the shrimp boil they do. The fresh fish at the market is great. You can ride bike all over the island. We loved it. We even had a alligator come see us every morning. The dolphin are great to watch in the evening.

OK, Edisto it is. We just recently moved to Atlanta so it's a fairly easy drive. Thanks for all the help.

When is the best time to visit Edisto?

For good beach weather, when is the best time to visit Edisto?

Is September and October better than the middle of the summer because it is not quite so hot? (I know there is always some risk of hurricanes in Sept/October.) How is June? I am a "yankee", so might I get a little too hot in July/August?
