Early retirement ... Nonfinancial costs

Live to work or work to live. Do the former and retirement would probably feel like purgatory. Do the latter and it would feel like a release from purgatory.

I enjoyed my work life and now my retired life.:D

Cheers

I enjoyed my work life up until the last couple of years. By the time I left I was more than ready to go. I will say I'm enjoying retirement much more than working. But working all those years is what made retirement possible.

I didn't retire, but I quit my job for 2.5 years when I was mid 30's. I had plenty to keep me busy (golf, yard work, auto and home maintenance, oh, and a newborn :) ) , but there's something to be said for mental stimulation. Reading and doing the crossword puzzle every day doesn't cut it. IMO, you need to find a hobby that's semi-taxing mentally, even if it's not particularly productive.

Same here. I'm home with the kids, and I have to keep my mind busy. Ebay helps a ton with that to be honest. Also, being involved in volunteer work helps.

These days retirement is a far cry from they days when my grandpa "retired" and then sat in front of the TV for 20 years:rofl: That kind of retirement would cause memory loss no matter what the age IMHO!

When my uncle retired all he did was some OTB gambling, and sitting and watching TV- football (and betting) and cartoons every single day! He never lost his memory right up until he died.

This study was very recent. It tested 60-year-olds. They told them a list of words and then asked them to recall what words they had said a few minutes prior. Those who were in countries where late retirement was more common performed better on this task than those where early retirement was most common.

It wasn't about dementia or total memory loss or boredom etc.
