Dyson Vacuums

I like my Oreck for vacuuming the top of the carpet. I can make the carpet look clean with it. I have had it for nearly 36 years. It always works, and I have a lot of bags for it. Then I get my Shark out and get a lot more dirt with it. The Oreck is not great on bare floors, especially next to walls, and we have a lot of bare floors.

Oh yea, I will say the Oreck 21 XL or whatever was the first "good" Vacuum I got, though my grandmother had a Kirby. I got it in 2007, we still have it and use it. It's quite good for most uses IMHO, and light at around 8lbs. Everything "better" weighs a lot more, though you aren't supposed to have to carry a Sebo or Kirby, but ... well.. it does happen. I think it's a "well known" vacuum salesman trick to vacuum a second time with the vacuum they're selling and "look at all the new dirt it picked up". But it seems like that's a "trick", if they went in reverse order, used their vacuum and then your's the "trick" would still work. It seems to be more that carpets look clean before they are, and something odd like different vacuums suck in different ways or something and so almost always will get something the other one didn't. Youtube used to have debunking demos of this, which I tended to believe but YMMV. I also moved away from carpet to harder floors, and the Sebo had a great hard floor attachment so the Oreck got less use.

We have a housekeeper.
I dunno what she uses, but...
Our Kenmore stays in the closet.

My Dyson Animal was a gift from my daughter for dogsitting. It is the most thoughtful gift I have ever received and is going on 8 years now. I have replaced the battery several times but nothing else replaced. One battery arrived dead and it made me very depressed thinking my Dyson might be dead.

It is so easy to use for an older person and I am still amazed by the amount of dirt it gets out.

It is noteworthy that about 1/2 of the negative replies are from members who note that they have never owned a Dyson.

They do a have a filter that eliminates particles from the exhaust. You can pop the filter out far quicker than removing the bag from any other vacuum. Wash the filter in the sink - let it dry overnight - pop it back in. The beauty of the cordless stick is it is fast and easy. Quicker than grabbing a broom and dustpan.

The floor model corded units can suck a golf ball through a straw (not quite, but its a great metaphor).

This is a good point. No matter how cyclonic the air flow is, a cyclone will never match the fine particulate removal capabilities of a fabric filter. (I work in air pollution control, and have extensive experience with the use of cyclones and fabric filters for removal of particulates from air streams.) When you need or want clean air, you use a HEPA filter, not a cyclone. You might use a cyclone ahead of a fabric filter to reduce the load on the filter, but you still need the filter for removal of fine particulates.
Very helpful!

Dyson suction is great. Unfortunately they are made out of cheap/brittle plastic. Even the hoses are thin and prone to puncturing.

They are better than a $50 Walmart vacuum, but not in the same league as Miele.

Ours too. Our housekeeper brings all of her own supplies and equipment.

I have never had a "punctured" hose. Do you even own a Dyson?

All the reviews talk about it being great at pulling in dirt
The issue for me now is how much work cleaning the filter is
Does the filter need frequent replacement or cleaning
The cheap vacuum I have at our second home requires a thorough cleaning after each pass at the rooms
The Dyson would replace this one

I bought my wife a Dyson v8 for Christmas when they came out. She loves it. Maybe five Christmas later I bought her a V10 and she loves it. Maybe this Christmas I will get her a v15 but maybe not because the other two still work and she needs her own cordless yard tools.

If you watch the Dyson guy on you tube taking the vacuum apart to clean it's pretty easy. I like things lubed so I did spray silicon lube on the moving parts after the plastic container seemed to stick. I let the filter dry out overnight. It's really easy to clean. The older models work great and are priced better.

I used to own a Dyson, and I made many repairs on it. The canister even came chipped out of the box.

Dyson definitely has some enthusiastic customers. If you like your Dyson vacuum, then I'm happy for you. There are better vacuums out there though.

No doubt there are many "good" vacuum brands available
None that hit my price point
I have a $100 Bissell I bought at Walmart
It works OK
I am tired of how the filters cost me money
The Dyson I am buying sells for $600 if I bought it today
I bought it yesterday for $300 on a daily deal
Best Buy
It will be delivered Thursday
I hope it lasts as long as I do

$300 is a fair price. It's definitely not worth $600 though.

I always bought my wife's Dyson gifts on Black Friday sales at Costco.

We have a housecleaning service and a Dyson cordless stick. Because we have dogs, one of which sheds a lot of hair, we occasionally use the Dyson in between cleanings to pick up the excess dog hair in high traffic areas, or when we're about to have company. It picks up a LOT, even if it's only been a few days since the cleaners were here. To minimize re-release of particulates, we empty the canister carefully deep into the tall kitchen garbage pail, or better yet, outside into the garbage bin.
