Duty Free Liquor problem

We purposely did not buy any Duty Free Liquor outside during our recent trip due to the liquids rules for carryons.

Then we bought 2 bottles of Duty Free Rum inside the airport, which then was allowed on the airplane.

The problem arose when we arrived in Atlanta Georgia (due to a non-stop flight), and had to go through customs.

After exiting customs, those Duty Free Liquids were no longer allowed!!!

By going through customs we had exited the "safe" area, and therefore our Duty Free Liquids were no longer safe and needed to be in our checked bags......

I typically do not like to put glass bottles in my suitcases, because they seem to get broken!

So be forewarned

Just returned from a cruise. We packed a bottle of Bailys and a bottle of Sherridan's in the box they came in. I put newspaper in the empty space and placed the box in the center of our soft sided suitcase surrounded on all sides by clothing.

This particular suitcase came off the carousel looking as if someone had beaten it half to death on purpose but the booze remained unbroken. I also had packed two souvenier glasses in the same box with the alcohol and they weren't even chipped. So the suitcase didn't survive but the liquor did.

It can make it home in checked luggage. You just have to pack it well.

It can be done just make sure you but something in all of the spaces between the bottles so they don't jostle. I too came home from a cruise last month and kept it in the box padded with clothing and it made it intact

That will vary with airport. In Seattle, customs is in the south terminal. After exiting customs you are still in a secure area; you don't leave secure areas until you leave the train station in the Main terminal.

Customs in JFK did not allow Duty Free liquor through either last month......

We came back from Mexico recently -we had a stop-through customs prior to arriving at hour home airport- brought with us foam packing sleeves- when getting our luggage at customs- we slipped the bottles, that were in plastic bags into the sleeves (just incase one would leak) - then-into the middle of our soft sided bags that are primarily clothes- all arrived safe and sound. rlb

I was about to purchase duty free liquor on my trip back from Grand Cayman but I asked what happens when I get to Atlanta to change planes to JFK and was told I would have to put bottles in checked luggage. I didn't want to take a chance of arriving in NY with broken bottles of scotch in my suitcase so I didn't buy.

And my two bright and shiny bottles of Absolut are now with the fine TSA folks in San Juan. Man... I wish I knew I had to leave the secure area between flights. I would have put the bottles in my luggage when I collected them to clear customs!

I know it's no consolation, but just returned from St.Martin. At Charlotte, I saw many a wonderful, expensive bottle of liquor spend the holidays with TSA personnel. Altho, announced on our flight, it was so garbled, people obviously did not hear it or listen. I predicted to my wife that this would occur after the announcement because it was so poorly done.
I got hit at customs because my liquor was not indiginous to St. Maarten and at least one liter of the two has to be (in all my tears of traveling had never known about that rule). Duty was reasonable so I can't really complain(and besides it still ended up with me for the holidays)

When we went to Hawaii. The Guava wine was so good, I had to take 4 bottles of it home to Utah.

Now the winery wont ship to Utah, not allowed. I got my wine safe and the infamous note saying they checked my bag was included. But isnt taking wine across state lines illegal?

Suggestion! Pack your bottles in your check bags and wrap your bottles in some bubble wrap.

I'm a criminal!

What? We live near the state border and transport liquor across it ALL THE TIME! Why would you think that is illegal?
