DRI upgrade assessment?

I attended a presentation yesterday where the rep asserted that all DRI trust owners, regardless of collection, in March, 2024, will start being assessed for upgrades of DRI properties to HGV standards. This will be beyond routine annual fees and total about $5/point assessed over a 10 year period. At the beginning of this year I converted my US Collection points to the Cabo Collection with the understanding that I would be avoiding most of the DRI->HGV upgrade costs. Who is deceiving me?

A salesman will almost always use fear to get you to buy something new. I wouldn’t worry too much about it, but, it’s always the owners that pay for upgrades. Hilton isn’t that generous to take the money out of their own pocket. How much will that amount be? I doubt it will be as high as $5/point over 10 years.

What a great way to increase delinquency and run the company right out of business.

A few months ago at an update we heard the same sales pitch, that anyone not in HGV Max would pay for all upgrades to bring DRI resorts up to Hilton standards so we should convert to HGV Max now!

A couple of weeks ago at an update we got the opposite sales pitch, that Hilton was generously throwing in millions to pay for all upgrades to bring DRI resorts up to Hilton standards so we should convert to HGV Max now!

As usual, it's all smoke and mirrors. DRI/HGV control every DRI resort board that I know of (there may be an outlier or two) so they can easily do what they want and owners have little say.

Somewhere in your paperwork is a document that says the written contract represents the entire agreement and that any information presented during the sales presentation, whether oral or written, is not part of the contract unless it is specifically included in the contract.

That allows the sales staff to say anything they like to try to close the sale.

We are currently staying as the San Luis Bay Inn in Avila Beach, Ca. We declined an invitation to a membership update for this afternoon. We received the call at 8:00pm on Sunday evening which seemed like an odd time to call. It was made to sound as though it was a group membership update rather than an individual sales pressure session. He gave the game away when he mentioned that we would get a prepaid credit card. When I stated that we are not interested in Max I was informed amongst other things that the manner in which we make reservations will be changing as the resort has been rebranded. I guess as we won't be going to the session we will have to wait and see if anything changes or if it is just the usual hot air!

The only evidence of rebranding is a temporary sign which has been draped over the permanent sign. We stay here a couple of times a year and I have noticed that since Hilton became involved a number of things have been removed from the units and supplies have become meager. The number of dishes has been reduced to the level of being inadequate. Hilton don't seem to understand that water is precious around this part of the country. The limited number of dishes now involves frequent handwashing and water wasting as we run out of dishes instead of being able to run the dishwasher with a full load. All the clocks have been removed from the units for some odd reason and only one garbage bag is now supplied. I am not sure what we are expected to do with the garbage. The only way to dispose of it is to leave it outside the room door for pickup, difficult without a garbage bag.

Every time we come these days I wonder what else will have disappeared! It would seem that the maintenance fees have gone up a chunk for 2004 and supplies, etc have gone down. Thanks Hilton.

It's that way over on the HGVC side, as well...
The boards are notable for having HGVC officers on the rosters.
A few years ago, all board members were given iPads at HOA
expense... per HGVC's suggestion to improve communication.

Don't let 'em scare you into doing what you'd rather not do.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I attended a similar presentation recently. Only it was 8 years and about $5.75 perpoint (over $380,000 for 66000 points.)
