DRI Polo Towers to go non-smoking

Recieved this E-mail today concerning the annual meeting

The annual meeting of Polo Towers Vacation Ownership Owners Association, Inc., was held on Wednesday, December 3, 2008. At the meeting, owners Jerry Lage and Jerome Rand were re-elected to the Board of Directors. Additionally, members voted to make all rooms at the resort non-smoking rooms.More information about the no smoking policy, as well as its effective date, will be sent to you shortly.

Personally, this doesn't really affect me since we don't smoke, don't mind those that do smoke and are responsible about it (cigarette burns on the counters, furniture et.... really suck) and we exchange our units anyway. But I imagine this will make some people happy and other owners more than a little mad.

I think it is a good thing that the board voted for it. Smoking in timeshares is is a community issue - not just a personal decision. A timeshare is not like your own home. It is used by many people and anyone that buys a timeshare knows that it is subject to rules and regulations that may be changed over time.

Smoking in timeshare, like hotels, causes a fire risk to all that are staying there. Further, it is hard to get the smell of cigarette smoke out of the furniture and carpeting. From a purely risk and refurbishment prospective, it is a better economic decision to ban smoking entirely from timeshares.

Yea, but it kind of stinks for those that smoke and paid developer pricing to suddenly be told they either can't smoke or can't use the timeshare they purchased without having to go outside everytime they want to smoke. While in the long run I do prefer that all timeshares be non-smoking, I can certainly understand the frustration of people who do smoke must be feeling.

Here is the E-mail about the new non-smoking policy. As you can see they will still allow smoking on the balconies of floors 6, 9 and 12.

Dear Valued Polo Towers Owner,

Owners belonging to the homeowners associations at Polo Towers have voted to make all rooms at the resort non-smoking rooms. Smoking will be allowed only on the balconies of the rooms located on floors 6, 9 and 12. Smoking is not allowed in the resort’s public areas except for designated smoking areas in the west and main lobbies. This policy is effective January 2, 2009.
