I've read a lot of threads from people unable to give their timeshares away, and some even paying thousands to get rid of them. I've just come across a forum on the DRI website, as I own at one of their resorts, and they will allow owners to surrender their ownership back to them. The criteria for surrender is this:
No active loans on the account;
Current year's maintenance is paid in full;
No usage allowed for the current year.
This was posted in August, 2011, by one of DRI's moderators (by the name of CeliaD).
This is good news for DRI owners wishing to off-load a timeshare they can no longer afford or use.

In the current brouhaha about the Special assessment at Point at Poipu, I've posted several times about this option and pointed folks to the DRI Member Forums, where this is posted. based on posts by some people, DRI may have terminated the program in the time since CeliaD mentioned the program.
