Douglas Trumbull, Visual Effects Maestro on ‘2001: A Space Odyssey,’ Dies at 79

That was the first movie I saw where the special effects completely captivated me. That and the musical score. It was a completely new to me vision of movie-making. It has held up well over time, a tribute to how well the special effects were done.

I still remember the Mad Magazine parody of the movie. They titled it "201 Minutes of a Space Idiocy".

Trumbull directed one of my favorites, "Silent Running," with Bruce Dern (`1972)
It had an eco-theme before environmentalism was a thing.
It also had drones long before Star Wars - Dewey, Huey & Louie.
