Has anyone had experience with Dollar Rental Car on Maui? We usually use Avis but Dollar had some good rates.
Thanks.

Jonelle

Enterprise has cockroaches!

We've not rented through Dollar but did rent through Enterprise in March '08. The carpet of the van was very dirty, the door handle was falling off the passenger and the cockroaches scattered when the doors were opened at night and the lights came on. I've written to Enterprise about our experience but to date have not received a reply. Don't go on price alone!

They do. It was $487 (Hertz,Alamo ,Budget vs Dollar $304 for a Jeep. We are leaving in 8 days. I have always done well with Hertz but not this time.

Ours is $131 (subcompact with Avis) or $101 with Dollar for a midsize. I haven't used Dollar in years. With two girls whose screams could bring tears to your eyes  at the sight of a bug definitely couldn't handle roaches. Mom wouldn't fare too well with them either. Am I reading it right that spouses are charged as additional drivers? I know with Avis spouses are not charged the additional driver charge. That might actually bring the two prices more in line with each other.

Are those pre-tax prices?

I was looking for a rental car at LAX for July and Dollar and a few of the other second tier rental car companies were less than half the price (post-tax) than the majors, so my reservation is currently with Dollar. If Avis or Hertz comes down in price to Dollars price, I'll probably go with them.

Yes they were pre tax prices for us. The Avis price was with the Starwood code discount.

Don't know about the Islands, but I've always been happy with Dollar when I've rented from them in Vegas.

Good Experiences with Dollar

We go to Maui once or twice a year. We rent our car through Dollar on most trips (they just seemed to be part of the packages we booked).

It is a good company. Never had a problem. You have to take a shuttle to their lot (as with all of the renting companies).

I used Hertz and Avis on occasion, but found that Dollar gave us better deals and good cars. I recommend it.

We have always rented from Dollar for our Florida vacations without a problem, and got a great deal for our upcoming 16 day June Maui vacation.

Here are two other sites.

I still find Dollar the least expensive for a Jeep Wrangler on Maui. Remember prices fluctuate daily. I use II,AAA,RCI,Marriott,Entertainment,Delta rental codes.

If it is minimally close I always choose Hertz as I love their Gold #1 program.

When we used them we have always had good luck. They are the company we use most in the island. I am fairly sure we were not charged for an extra driver.

Their website shows this policy:

Authorized Drivers: The DOLLAR vehicle may be driven only by an authorized driver. An authorized driver is the renter and any additional person who appears at the time of rental and signs the rental agreement. All authorized drivers must satisfy our age requirements, have a valid drivers license, and fulfill our other qualifications, which vary by location. Employers and co-employees of renters renting on corporate rate plans, if properly licensed and meet our age requirements, are authorized to drive the vehicle while acting within the scope of their employment duties. See our credit requirements and drivers license requirements below. The authorized driver and any additional authorized drivers may be subject to a driver record check (See below). No other persons are authorized to drive the vehicle.

It was still too expensive in '06 ($750). So we reserved a compact for $186. Got the the airport to check-in and they asked if we wanted to upgrade to a Sebring for $10/day. Didn't want a car that big and asked how much for a Wrangler. The wonderful gentleman said oh, that is a convertible, $10/day - much less than booking the Wrangler:D. We see how that works for us this trip...

I just called Dollar to clarify their additional driver policy. You must be an authorized driver and listed on the agreement to drive the car. Only the original renter is covered with the base fee. Additional authorized drivers (a spouse is considered an additional driver) are charged $10/day. I just wanted everyone to know that under their written policy you could be charged the fee for a spouse. That possiblity undermines any savings for me.
