I have a Last Minute reservation that starts today at Bentley Brook. I'm not planning on going until Monday to fit my schedule and would prefer to the room sit empty for a few days due to Covid. Honestly, I'm not 100% sure if we will make it at all due to work. I was just about to call them and let them know of my delayed plans when I received a call from them around 2pm "just checking to see if you will be checking in today"

In all my TS stays I have never received such a call.

Now it is on my radar that they are checking to possibility rent the room out to another. So, I tell them I'm not sure when I will be up, but I have the room for the week and will be get there eventually. They said that was ok, but to please call back tomorrow if I don't think I will check in then.

Is this typical Wyndham practice? The phone call?

Yes this is standard practice now - either calls or texts or both. We are signed up for texts and always receive texts in advance of checkin to validate our arrival time and plans.

Given the new covid-19 protocols that require more advance planning and cleaning, the resorts really do appreciate the heads up so that they can plan appropriately. It has nothing to do with rental activity.

With wyndham I usually get text messages for some locations, not calls, but sometimes some of the smaller locations do call.

Pre-Covid I started getting texts about a year and a half ago. They were generic "we're happy you're coming" texts. But they always invited you to contact them with any questions you might have which I always appreciated, because they actually had a human being who would respond if you asked a question.

I got a text before my last stay about two weeks ago that was to inform me of their Covid restrictions and the amenities that will not be available. I have a two week reservation starting this coming Friday and I got a phone call for the same reason. I think it's generally helpful.

Bentley Brook is with an hour or two from several family members (owners) and they go there a lot. Bentley Brook often calls in advance. I don't think it's suspect (to wanting to rent your room). They are preparing and knowing your plans assists with that. They are awesome there, by the way. Friendly, great activities and crafts. Almost a home away from home for my family.

Regardless of the resort, if I wasn't checking in the day my reservation starts, I would call and let them know. If you don't check in within 48 hours, your reservation is cancelled. It can get a little dicey anyways. I've never lost a reservation, but I've had to have it 'rebuilt', it was cancelled in Wyndham's system but the resort (since there was rooms available) basically recovered it for me in the resorts system. (I think it's 48 hours, for sure there is a timeframe in which they are allowed to cancel the reservation)

I do not like given my cell number to timeshare folks, would they called or email me instead?

Communication with Wyndham is very hit or miss. They don't always call. Sometimes they'll text. Very rarely do they email. Resorts differ. My recent experiences have been: Bentley Brook tends to call. Atlantic City, Emerald Grand, Panama City, Ocean Walk, Bonnet Creek usually text. Branson (at the Meadows) emailed. It's not just checkin info, it's also pool reservation information, activities, specials at dining (again resort specific).

I, too, hate to give out my cell (or any other personal information). I'm fairly comfortable it's not used for marketing, although I wouldn't swear to it. I get far more timeshare (and other scam type calls) on my home phone than I do my cell. And I never use my home phone on stuff. I use my cell a ton on the Wyndham reservations. Unfortunately, I think if you want the information that comes from the resorts, you'll need to share your cell and email information.

Wyndham has been in my name for over 5 years now. My stepmother still gets timeshare scammer phone calls. My gut feel is the old, old, mailing lists get sold over and over. Not Wyndham, but just last week we got junk mail for my mother-in-law. She passed away almost 20 years ago now. My husband was the executor, thus her name and our address - still after all these years! I digress.

I have gotten calls from Newport and Williamsburg. Texts as well. Fairfield Mountains (Lake Lure) sent an email. The texting was really convenient. We went to Newport right when they reopened, and the room was missing some kitchen items. One text and the items were brought right up.

I second Bentley Brook staff are awesome. Our daughter moved to about an hour from their and we stayed there last year.

We always enjoyed the atmosphere too and loved to use it as a base for Jacob's pillow and Tanglewood performances.

The usually call and/or text.

I'm at Fairfield glade for a week now, they were good about calling and texts.
I'm moving to Fairfield Sapphire Valley this Friday for another week there, I have not heard a peep from them yet, no calls or texts
Then headed to Smokey Mountains on the following Friday for another week, no contact from them yet either

The pre-approval text are appreciated, but the concierge/parking pass desk will call and harass you if you did not agree to a owners update after check-in

I have been an owner for almost 10 years and stayed at 20+ Wyndham resorts so far. Sure, I’ve put up with being harassed by the people at the parking pass desk. But I have never once had one of them call me in the room to try to get me to go to change my mind and go to an update. I often get a call welcoming me and making sure everything in the unit is okay. People talk about being called here on TUG all the time, but I’ve never experienced it. I guess I’m just lucky.

I have had the exact same experience as you. I never unplug the phone, nor do I answer it, but the messages have always been just recorded generic thanks and how can we help messages.

Until today!

I got my first ever phone call in the room urging me to attend a sales meeting that I had refused at the parking pass desk. I admit I usually love learning their new sales techniques but I just wasn’t up for it this trip.

It's no longer an owner update you see; it's now a "benefits explanation meeting". Many new benefits are being applied to your membership, and they will all be explained at this meeting.

In the past, I would often agree to attend sales meetings, and so I would usually get a reminder call on the in room phone about 30 minutes before the meeting was due to start, and if I was in the shower at that point and couldn't answer they would also call me on my cell. I didn't think there was anything wrong with that.

So things change. I’ll also say that the woman who called me today was very pleasant although very persistent, but that’s really what a sales professional is supposed to be.

I didn’t agree to go, but I wasn’t annoyed when we hung up.

We stayed at Kingsgate in Williamsburg last week. My husband did not really want to go. I convinced him we had to have a change of scenery before school (virtually) starts. I told the park pass (now wrist band) person this at check in. We received a call to the room, followed by a call to my cell after not picking up. My husband told that person he was not willing to attend an in-person meeting. She told him we would get another call because the information is so important and Wyndham will not be sending any communications via email or the website. They called again the next day. I asked why can’t we have a phone/video meeting if this information is urgent. I told her we have not even gone to the pool, so why would we go to an update meeting.

I live is Northern California which, you may know, is on fire at the moment. A few weeks ago we were evacuated because the fires we’re getting close to our house. I managed to get a week at Wyndham Angels Camp at the last minute. We have been to Wyndham Angels Camp more than any other since is less than 4 hours from where we live. Angels Camp was further away from the fires at the time, but not the smoke. They did a pretty good job of curbside checkin. It was the parking pass people that were doing the checkin. He pushed going to a “education meeting” to learn all about the new things they are offering, and other BS. I was curious enough to find out how they are doing updates during COVID that I agreed to go. I told him that if I didn’t like their social distancing setup when I got there I would not attend. He said that was fine. Plus I hadn’t been to an update in years. About an hour later he called to let me know that I couldn’t go. I asked why not if the new information was so important that all owners needed to know. He just said I wasn’t on the rotation, what ever that means. Everyone is doing everything over Zoom now. I agree with you, If these meetings are not about sales at all, like they keep saying, they SHOULD do them by some sort of video conference. BTW, my house was fine when I returned just lots of ash on our deck. Now the smoke has descended and it not good to go outside. The air quality index is over 200 (Very Unhealthy)
