One of my customers had it for a couple years. It started out OK as she was moving up from dial-up but over time it became a problem to keep running, was expensive and had strict usage limits that at least she kept bumping into.

She recently switched to the Verizon USB wireless 3G card - for her desktop pc - and is much happier with that. Cheaper too. So think about that if you have decent digital coverage in your area.

We just got rid of it. John hit it right on. It was expensive, we paid $89/month, and the threshold's were killers. My kids kept exceeding the threshold and when that happens you are downgraded to dial up speeds for a minimum of 24 hours. We switched to Comcast and it is much much faster.

Also, when there were heavy rains, you lose the service. I also got very tired of talking to the Daves and Janes with very heavy indian accents whenever I had to call tech support which was very frequently.

I have had it for about 7 years. I live in a rural area with no cable and limited cell coverage. So except for dial-up it is my only reliable option. We also have the Verizon card that we can occassionaly use when we get a good signal, but which my husband primarily uses when traveling. Hughes is better than dial-up, but... If you have any other true high speed option, go for it. Hughes is extremely poor when accessing any secured site, almost as bad as dial-up.

We had it for several years. We are also rural, no cable, spotty cellular coverage. To our amazement, the local phone company was bought out by Windstream and Windstream installed some sort of junction that let us get DSL. We switched immediately. The satellite is okay when dial-up is your only other option, but if you have options, choose the option. As Caribbean said, when you get heavy rains you lose service. Often times we would just have slow speeds for no apparent reason. We never hit usage limits since we don't play online games or do much uploading. We were responsible for all the equipment, too, which was a costly worry. Glad to have the DSL now. DSL isn't perfect, either, but much faster and more reliable than the Hughesnet.
