Does an owner have to wait until 30 days out to put a renter’s name on the reservation?

I agree with you on this. In order for the resort to confirm the existence of a reservation, someone needs to have all the details of the reservation already, so I do not see where is the privacy issue.

The fact that someone has obtained info doesn't mean that they got it from the actual person. Maybe I found a printed confirmation is someone's trash...

It isn't any violation of privacy for MVC to confirm that a reservation exists under a certain name. That is how Redweek verifies reservations each and every day. I urge any of the folks I've rented my week to feel free to call MVC to confirm the reservation number, date and location.

You urge them to do that while the reservation is in your name, or after they at least pay some deposit and you put it in their name?

I urge them to do that if they have any concerns prior to paying me money to actually rent the reservation. Although I will add that given the changes to Redweek last year, if I'm going to rent out a reservation now, I'll just pony up the extra money for the "verified and protected" posting. It just makes the renter feel more comfortable.

Note that nowadays, if you do rent out a reservation, MVC requires you provide the renter's email address and the confirmation of name change is sent by MVC directly to that email address and the owner is taken out of the loop.

In that case, the privacy issue would be caused by the confirmation left in the trash. The resort would not add any more private information than what the person who obtained the confirmation already had before the phone call.

Looking at this from a different angle, what if the renter is Executive level and wants to try to grab that same week within 30 days in order to get the 25% point discount. That might explain why he does not want to finalize the transaction until within 30 days. If so, the excuse given is pretty lame, but maybe that's what is really going on here.

Hello,
I know someone who is trying to rent a Marriott timeshare. The owner, who posted the rental on Redweek, said since the reservation is tied to their Bonvoy number, the renter’s name can‘t be added until a month before check in. The owner said they will save the week for the renter until then and the renter doesn‘t need to pay until then. Is this correct? Marriott makes the owners wait until a month before check in to change the names on the reservations? I have never had that happen to me when I have rented from owners in the past. This is my friend‘s first time renting from Redweek. My friend called the Marriott Timeshare and there is a reservation with the name of the owner for that week. This just seems strange to me. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

We’ll be traveling to Hawaii next month with our daughter and SIL. SIL accidentally booked their flights one day ahead of ours. Changing the flight date was expensive and a hotel night was expensive. I booked a single night for them at KBC (a lot less expensive than a hotel night). I was able to put their name on the reservation at the time I made the reservation 10 months in advance of the arrival date. So yes, the owner can add the renters name before the 30 day date. MVC doesn’t know if I’m renting this room to the kids or giving it to them.

Thanks! Yes, it seems the owner is misunderstood or who knows what. My friend is going to find another rental. Also, not having a contract is never good in my opinion, which made it even more bizarre. I thank everyone for their input.
