I have RCI points. A couple of months back I booked a silver 2 BR TS on Maui, but not on the ocean. A gold 2 BR TS (different company) became available for the same week and this complex is on the ocean.

Is there any way of reserving the new TS and cancelling the old reservation?

I suppose I need to call RCI?

OK, called RCI. Aaargh. I would lose the original $179 transfer fee on the 1st/original TS that I would cancel. Then I would pay a 2nd $179 transfer fee for the new TS. Aaargh.

They tried to sell me vacation cancellation protection ($49) when I made the original reservation. Good thing I didn't take it. It's only good for weeks. Aargh.

That's correct - if you cancel an exchange, you forfeit the exchange fee, so you have to decide if the 2nd unit is worth the fees.

You can get lucky with the reps though, if it's a recent exchange.

On Tuesday night I made an exchange for Marriott Manor Club for next June, with a Friday check in. Last night a unit with a Saturday check in became available in the inventory. I called this morning, and they changed the reservation for no charge, (but did mention that it would normally incur a new exchange fee). I was already prepared to pay the fee, but I was very grateful when they waived it!

There is cancellation protection for Points exchanges, but you only protect the points. You still lose your exchange fee from what I've been told.

"Changing an Exchange", is that what it's called? I didn't know what to call it, so I made something up.

Since we are going to Hawaii for 2 weeks I decided not to spend the extra $179, since the RCI Rep didn't offer anything different and I didn't think to ask/beg. I''ll try to spend the extra week in a Marriott instead and avoid RCI this time.
