Planning a trip back to Cancun in May (2009). And have a couple questions re Deep Sea Fishing. I will prob book thru E-Plus, because we had good luck with them last time. We are a family of 3: DH, DS(11), and myself. Obviously, there's quite a jump from SHARED to PRIVATE for our little family of 3....so, I'm leaning towards shared. How many people do they usually squeeze on a shared charter?

AND do we keep the fish? DH wants his catch for dinner. I heard in the past there were resturants at the Royals that would cook it for something like $6 per person. We will be staying at the Royal Caribbean....Does anyone know if they will the cook our fish?

TIA
Micaela

We went there in Feb. Personally, I find deep sea fishing in Cancun to be a waste of $$.

The guys, hook the bait, hold the pole until the fish bite. Then you spend 5 minute wrestling the the fish to get it in. Then they take the fish out of the hook.

There were very little challenge in it other than reeling the fish in. They want to keep the fish and was somewhat surprise when we wanted to keep them. The hotel did not want to cook them.

I find the fishing in the state more challenging.

I hope that's not really the case.....DH will be so disappointed if so. May I ask who you booked through?

A few years ago we went fishing, had a great time and when we headed out I told them I wanted Mahi Mahi for dinner. So we caught tuna and a swordfish then they went to a certain area and the captain spotted the fish and I got my Mahi Mahi. They cleaned the fish for us and we gave the crew what we didn't want. Went back to the RC and they asked how we wanted it cooked, they suggested, grilled, fried and blackened and it was great. 5-6$$ I believe and that included dinner rolls and a salad. They brought out this large cart and we had 8 of us there and we ate until we couldn't eat anymore then we told the waiter to return the fish to the kitchen for the staff to enjoy, You talk about big smiles and away they went. I'm not big on rough seas but it's worth it if you enjoy that sport. Have fun!

We are going to be there the same week as you and staying at the Royan Mayan. I will send you a private message.

Yes, as jspang posted, the Royals will take care of the fish for you.

Several times we have been happy guests at fish dinners where our friends caught the fish and the Royals' staff did everything else. They cook it however you want, or several different ways if you prefer a choice, put it on big platters with potatoes or rice, vegetables, salad, bread, serve, clean up - and it's only about $6 per person.

Let the kitchen staff have the leftovers, and leave a nice tip.

We went fishing in Cancun and it was fun. Not as challenging as in Mazatlan or Clearwater, FL. I like going out far enouugh so I cant see land but thats just me.

In Cancun, we didnt have as much luck as the other places and the fish werent as large but thats the luck of the draw. We kept some of our fish and had the Royal Mayan cook it. The kitchen staff kept alot of it and I gave some to my favorite new best friend, the bartender and his friends and housekeeping. We didnt take any home.

The $6/per person seemed about right. They supply extra veggies and rice. It was very nice and fun.

We were there for the last two weeks. My friend went fishing for 5 hours at a cost of $275 U.S. He caught a bunch of barracuda. The guys on the boat filleted them.

The Royal Mayan’s Palapa restaurant prepared them. Some were breaded and deep fried and some were grilled. They were excellent! The charge was about $10.00 U.S. per person and that included squash and rice. Sorry, but the price has gone up.

Yummmmmm! I hope somebody we know goes fishing and invites us to share. $10 is fine with me!
