DaveNW, what happened to the Costco Turkey Burgers?

We loved the Kirkland brand, and then a replacement brand (didn't like), and now none.

I have no idea. You may want to ask at your warehouse, to see if they've been deleted. (I'd think that would be pretty unlikely - turkey burgers are pretty much a staple these days.) They might be temporarily unavailable because they're being reworked with a new distributor? Costco owns the Kirkland brand, but they only make some of their own products. Things are quite often made for Costco by other companies. If the standards aren't up to snuff, Costco may be taking the manufacturing to a different company.

I've noticed a few food changes at my warehouse too - the Grilled Chicken Strips (the unbreaded kind) I really like taking for my lunch at work have been absent at my warehouse for awhile. In its place are about five different kinds of chicken nuggets - definitely not the same thing. I'm hoping after the holidays things settle back to a more normal selection.

Major ground turkey recall the other day in the news might have something to do with it. Think it was Jenny-O.

We live in the Hampton Roads Virginia area and Costco have never sold any kind of burgers in their food court location.

Are you talking food court? I have never purchased the frozen turkey burgers but a couple of times did buy a pack of ready to cook hamburgers, most recently about 2 years ago. Last time I looked they still sold the burgers.

It could be the recall of ground turkey or it could be the Contract expired and Costco is still negotiating a new Contract. We have seen TV Shows on how competitive it is for manufactures to get a Costco Contract. For a new product it can take a couple years of testing. Talking to Wineries in Napa Sonoma area it is a hughly competive to get their product into Costco. A few years ago Costco stopped carrying Red Lobster Chedder Bisquits (one of our favorites) as they negociated a new Contract. Lucky we heard about it and bought a couple boxes to tide us over.

@DaveNW You should really ask for some kind of commission from Costco or DW should get on-call pay or something for this .

there are frozen burgers in the frozen meat aisles section

Our main issue with Costco, once we can finally snag a boondocks parking place, is the size of the packaging fo two people. Took us two years to get through the box of Cheddar Bisquits, and I swore "never again!" We went the year without renewing our membership. Now my goal for the regular grocery store is to keep a much smaller home pantry. We don't need a selection of ten Progresso soups to choose from!

Thanks! I've been saying that for over 20 years. Nobody listens. LOL! :D

Kidding aside, the only "perk" we receive is a free Executive Membership (but only the two of us count toward the 2% rebate), and a small (~10-12#) turkey at Thanksgiving. There isn't enough markup to allow for employee discounts, and nobody at Costco works on a commission. Dang it. :)

Not even the tire guys? They sure act like it.

I do know this Costco give all their employees a turkey for Christmas or Thanksgiving. I do not know if it includes all employees.
Plus Costco give bonuses to their employees during the year and they have an excellent health care plan..

I'm told that nope, no commissions for any employee. Even the tire guys.

BTW, @davidvel , I went to Costco today for other things, but made a point of looking for Turkey Burgers for you. I found this in the refrigerated section:

Is that the one you saw before that you didn't care for? Not sure if it'd be a different brand down your way, but you could stop at Member Services next time you're in your local warehouse and reference that Item Number, asking what the status is. They should be able to tell you what's up. (There is no + or * in the upper-right corner of the price sign, so this item isn't Pending Delete. It looks to be a regular inventory item.)

Dave

I thought the ones I bought were Butterball brand. But I suppose they get different items from different suppliers either regionally or based on availability. Anyway, they are kind of a staple at our house.

That's kind of my thought, too. Maybe they're just sold out at @davidvel's warehouse?

They were a different brand, can't recall which, but didn't compare to Kirkland ones. They shrunk down a lot, and not as tasty. We may have missed them on our last trip, but won't get them again in any event. I'm hearing from a friend that Kirkland not planning a comeback for their TB, according to a warehouse employee. I hope its not true.

Next time you go into your Costco, ask them about this. The Member Services desk can give you the whole story. Speculation from a warehouse employee through a friend is not very reliable. If the item has been deleted, it will indicate that in the system. It is possible the Kirkland brand was deleted, in favor of the next brand you saw, but if that one is also deleted, maybe it's because the customer feedback was that they weren't very good. (Which could account for why they're not in your warehouse now.) Costco will usually rework an item they want to sell until they hit on a good balance of customer satisfaction and proper price point. I'm told that meat items tend to be regional, and what we have in our warehouse in my area could easily be different than what you have in your warehouse in your area. Either way, I'd think a turkey burger in some form would be popular enough to be sold throughout the warehouse system.

If they bring out a new version of the turkey burger, don't assume it's not good - try it out, and if you don't care for it, return the product for a refund. But you may find the newest version might be the best one yet.
