Daughter's friends hit by drunk driver

I am praying also for Sean and the girl who was critically injured, for their parents and families, for the doctors and nurses caring for them. When my son lived at home, and we are a long way out from population centers, I used to tell him that if he couldn't be home by 1, to not leave for home until 3, as our bars here in California close at 2. I know it seemed really late, but I'd rather he was at Denny's eating something then on the road at that time.

klisow,

I too have sent a message up for Sean, for those who are helping him and those who are affected by this terrible tragedy. Note below that it was apparently the officer who was called to intervene that turned out to be the individual responsible for initially bringing Sean back from the brink.

I have no idea what the law is in most states regarding bars, clubs, and consumption of alcohol on Sunday; but, it should NOT be taking place.

It is not unusual to hear about a tragedy like this taking place in the wee hours of a Sunday morning after the bars close; but not late on a Sunday Evening.

Unfortunately, it appears that it is legal to consume alcohol on Sunday in the great state of Minnesota. Maybe the good folks in Woodbury, MI can turn this tragedy into something positive by starting a grass roots movement to STOP the sale of alcoholic beverages on Sunday which is a day when the average family tends to drop their guard when driving home from Church, Dinner, fellowship and family gatherings.

Teens Hit by Drunk Driver in Woodbury
Two teens hurt after drunk driver slams into car

WOODBURY, Minn. - Two teenagers were injured when the car they were riding in was hit by a drunk driver in Woodbury, Minn. Sunday evening.

According to Woodbury police, officers received a complaint of a drunk man leaving a restaurant near Radio Drive and Valley Creek Road around 6:30 p.m. An officer investigating the compliant saw a car matching the description given to police speeding eastbound on Valley Creek near Jewel Drive.

Before the officer could attempt a traffic stop, the drunk driver crashed his car into a car stopped at the intersection of Valley Creek and Woodbury Drive. The officer was able to initiate life-saving care to a 17-year-old boy, who was critically hurt and taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. A 16-year-old girl in the car was also taken to the hospital. The 17-year-old driver was not transported.

The crash involved a total of four vehicles.

The alleged drunk driver, a 38-year-old man, was taken to Woodwinds Hospital. Woodbury police and the Minnesota State Patrol are continuing to investigate the crash. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor and charges are pending.

“This is a tragic reminder of why people should not drink and drive,” Woodbury Police Sgt. Curt Zacharias said. “This is why we continue to make DWI enforcement a priority in Woodbury. It is unfortunate that we could not prevent this crash.”

but goofy, what if that makes them get extra wasted on Saturday night because on Sunday they can't? Or what if they just stock up the day before for the next day get wasted and go out for a spin for smokes. I see where your getting at and am encouraged by your concern, I just respectfully disagree with it as a viable solution. I think criminals will still break the law, and you would just end up restricting beverages to law abiding citizens. what I believe is needed is stiffer penalties and mandatory jail time, especially for repeat offenders.

Get well soon to Sean and all involved, we are all praying for ya.

People who drink like this guy don't care what day of the week it is.

And unfortunately not having a Sunday alcohol license doesn't necessarily mean anything. My mom's husband (I refuse to give him the distinction "step dad") used to own a bar that did not have a Sunday liquor license. No problem, they just didn't ring in their sales on Sunday. Their patrons, many of them alcoholics just like mom and her husband, still got drunk, and they got the added "bonus" of not having to report Sunday income. Win, Win, right? :(

What a horrible tragedy. I am praying for all involved.

Absolutely

Every day I pass a huge billboard advertising the services of an attorney who specializes in defending drivers charged with DUI. I always look at the billboard with absolute disgust.

I know everyone is entitled to a legal defense, but to me, this is really really low. I don't know how that attorney can sleep at night.

Best wishes to the injured young man during his long recovery.

I have to agree with Siesta - it's not about what days the bars are open, but about the Drunk Drivers. Many New England states still have what we call "blue laws" which prohibit a whole bunch of things in Sunday. But those assume that the whole population celebrates Sunday as the Sabbath - there are plenty of people who observe Sabbath on Saturday, as well as those who don't observe at all.

I also don't think it will make anybody safer, even if people are likey to be on the road returning from church services. You have to consider the whole impact: if you restrict liquor licenses, what will happen to the wedding industry? Those who want to serve alcohol at their reception will have to move their weddings to a different day. How about Champagne Brunch - often served on Sunday?

Further, it isn't really an issue of sales on Sunday. If the alcoholic can't drink at a bar on Sunday, he will drink somewhere else - perhaps somewhere that nobody will have any chance of getting him to slow down, or to stop him from driving. Perhaps instead of not allowing bars to serve the alcohol, make them partially liable if they continue to serve someone who ends up causing such an accident. Some states already do this. But even that could drive the alcoholic "underground." I have known bartenders who have refused to serve someone, only to hear that person was in an accident not long after, when they stormed out of the bar and tried to drive home.

Even restrictions on purchasing cars won't work - I have neighbors who drive unregistered cars with suspended licenses. If they need a car, they purchase a cheap used one, and never change the title or register it (too bad for the original owner - always complete your sale at the registry and make sure the title is changed!) If they want to drink, they will find a way. If they want to drive, they will find a way to do that too.

A very sad story that happens all too often.

Stopping the sale of alcohol at stores after a certain hour would help.

Inexperienced drivers should not be allowed to have any alcohol in their body when operating a car even if they are of age. Ontario recently started a law where YOUNG drivers could not have any alcohol in them while driving. This law is being challenged as age discrimination.

There is an organization in Nassau County where you can join for $25 and if you need a ride home a taxi will be sent to pick you up free of charge.

There needs to be stiffer penalties for first and repeat offenders. Exceptions should not be made to allow for driving to and from work. A good exception may be they are allowed to drive only when they are a designated driver. This may be better as an idea than a reality.

It always amazes me that people with millions of dollars and in the public image would not just hire a driver whenever there is a chance they may drink. They have so much to lose and do not even seem to care.

The most important thing is people need to decide themselves that it is not worth it. Whatever their personal reason is.

Everyone thinks that it will not happen to them. Probably even a few reading this thread and sadly lots who know victims personally.

Why do police not stand outside of bars when they are closing and people can ask for a quick field test or breathalyzer test before they decide if they are alright to drive?

SEAN WAS TAKEN OFF OF The VENTILATOR :)

Thanks so much for the outpouring of support and prayers.

As of yesterday, Sean's parents reported that Sean was taken off of the ventilator, relieved of the drain in his head, and taken off all sedation. He is able to communicate and asking when he can leave the hospital. His parent's are uncertain when this will happen... but Sean is insisting on a date. This is just like Sean. His parents were so happy to remove his restraints, as he has finally quit fighting the nurses. At times, they have needed 7 people to hold him down.

He has another surgery this Wednesday to address more facial issues. Please keep praying for him and his family.

The outpouring of support in our community, especially by our teens, has been tremendous. In one week's time, the teens have raised a large amount of money to help out. The family is shocked at this support. It is impressive to see these teenagers ban together and turn their angst into a positive.

I would like to add for those questioning the driver of the vehicle. First, he was a 38 year-old man (not a teen). This also took place at 6:30 in the evening... not late at night. His friends allowed him to leave the restaurant. The restaurant did call the police, as did other people in the establishment. The accident happened very close to the restaurant and there was an officer who spotted him immediately and by the time the officer turned his car around... the crash had occurred.

Honestly, whether we serve alcohol in MN on Sundays has little to do with the situation. This man was a danger any day of the week. If it wasn't Sunday it would have been another day. It can happen any time, any place where someone is drinking!

I will keep you updated. Thanks again for all your prayers. They are working. Miracles do happen... and Sean was the product of one.

God Bless!

my prayers are with sean, his family and friends. i know there will be a long road of recovery ahead of him. I hope he will come out of this and be able to talk to our teenagers about the importance of wearing seatbelts, not drunk driving and how wearing one might have affected his injuries. it is terrible in this day and age that kids dont understand the importance of seatbelts.

AND about the dangers of drunk driving. Kids are more likely to listen to a peer than an adult.

I am so glad that Sean has survived and does not appear to be severely brain damaged. It will be a difficult time with all the reconstructive surgery.

Unfortunately, I do not think the USA is ready to take the draconian measures that would put an end to the carnage of drunk drivers.

its awful the way some people think that "it wont happen to me." i have a coworker that constantly drinks and drives and it is very frustrating and upsetting to those around her.

I am glad to hear Sean is recovering - all my thoughts and well wishes. What a horrible thing for Sean and his family.
