I am at a loss - any ideas? Or others with same problem?
Our Verizon account is now going over data usage for Robin's iPhone6

Nothing has changed in her usage for months (very little data use) - not even close to monthly plan allotment (2G minimum) - maybe 10% of total.

Yet, in last 6 weeks we are getting notices of data overage - and getting charged at 1G at time. Twice now. I have gone thru Settings and eliminated data hogs - but what could I be missing?
Ideas?
Is this an effect of an OS update?

I hear you. I have no specific answers for you, but my feeling is that yes, it's because of an update. It was once just fine, and suddenly it wasn't fine. Some things that didn't used to use data now suddenly do. I had turned everything off that I could, but data still was trickling away too fast. So I contacted Verizon about it, and they suggested updating my plan to a higher data plan, but that was less money than I was previously paying. (How does THAT work?) Conspiracy theorists being what they are, after the upgrade, suddenly my data plan wasn't using what it once was, and my data use was back to what it had originally been, before the sudden extra use. I think (but have no proof), that it was all a scam to get me to upgrade my plan. And now that I'm on their "roll over unused data" plan, my total monthly usage isn't as high as it was before the trouble started. I think they caused it as a moneymaking ruse.

Wow Dave. I have the exact same story. And I still believe that something funny is going on. Too much of a coincidence!

I know this may sound dumb but I know I have done it. I shut off wifi when it runs slow and never turn it back on so I am using Verizon data for a few days before I catch it.

Agree that companies are finding a new way to make more money. I used an ATT hotspot for a couple months and it used 5 GBs of data much faster than T-Mobile uses data. But during the last couple of months, my phone with T-Mobile is showing way more data use than ever before and I did not change how I use it. I did get a new phone and ios10, maybe that has something to do with it, but I don't think so.

Very interesting...we are still sharing a Verizon account with our grown kids because it saves them some money. It was never a big deal until the past two months. One of my daughter's uses a ridiculous amount of data - twice as much as anyone else. Admittedly she does social media as part of her job, but not *that* much. I will have to see if it is something to do with her phone - an iphone 6s.

Interesting. Our Verizon contract is coming up next week. Conspiracy?

Thanks Dave (SmithOp) for the data usage link. Found a few that I didn't already know about.

I chatted with Verizon Rep - they removed the charges (as they could see an unusual jump in usage) and are investigating the data jump. They want me to send screen shots of data usage if this occurs again. I reset the data so could not send that only 24.6 MG had been used on this phone since Nov 22 (when I 1st reset after this occurred). I must say that the Verizon Rep was very helpful and courteous. They mentioned it may be due to issue with their reporting system, and that WiFi usage may be inaccurately counted as data.

I also downloaded the free app that measures data and WiFi usage.

I have a feeling that this occurred with the new OS update (10.1.1) on the iPhone6. If true, then there should be plenty of online reports of this occurring. OS 10.2 is now available - I will check data hogs after new update.

Stay vigilant.

Yes, stay vigilant. You can monitor usage online for each device. We are sharing data now with my brother. We got off kilter LAST month, while staying in a timeshare with wretched Wifi. Kept switching my husband back to cellular. And he didn't notice. This month all seems back to normal.

Had same problem since iphone 6 a few months ago.. Called w/ problem..Agent said "blah blah blah" End result was to get more data usage at a lower cost. I said ok. Agent said: " It will cost less than current plan" .....But one thing agent also said was to close out all websites b4 going outside ur Wifi....Seems to work

To prevent bad WiFi signal skipping to Data - go to Settings-Cellular and at bottom turnoff WiFi assist.

Also on same screen can remove Apps using Data

My son has an iPhone 6 and his usage jumped and we had $50+ in overage charges for both September and October. We have Sprint. He was the only one showing a jump in usage. There are 4 others on the plan but all have Android phones. It sounds like an iPhone issue to me.

I recently switched from AT&T to T-Mobile. Love it. No more worries about data overage as it is unlimited. If you travel overseas, the free roaming and free texts also come handy. My only complain is that the coverage, although decent, is not as good as AT&T. Hope T-mobile will continue to improve.

My iPhone 6+ exceeded its data allowance last month. First time ever. Don't know if it's the upgrade, or the fact I let two yr old grandson watch YouTube train videos while I had him out.
Anyway Verizon didn't charge for the extra data. Some kind of holiday bonus?? Not sure how it worked cause husband looked at the bill not me.
Curious to see what happens in Dec.

I checked my IPhone settings and almost ALL the apps were set to run on Cellular. I didn't do that.

Must have been the most recent update.

the unlimited data feature on T-Mobil is good. They throttle back to "3G" speeds if you exceed your data plan limit (4 GB) but you never have to worry about extra charges. I don't even check the data usage anymore

Yes, it is nice. My wife has an old plan with them (like $25/month) that gives her enough minutes and unlimited texting. Then a couple years back T-Mobile turned on "unlimited" data for all plans. Even though her plan never had data, she started getting the 3G data automatically -- never had to pay a cent more. Although each month at the beginning of her billing cycle she gets a text message that she has used all of her high-speed data for the month. LOL!

Turn off automatic updates under "Settings" and only update apps when you're connected to wi-fi. Turn off "background app refresh". Go to Cellular and scroll to the bottom.. reset statistics. Turn off cellular data usage for apps that should be run on a wi-fi netwok; streaming apps. Monitor for a few days. See how much data usage is used by System services in the same screen.

Beyond that, look at your Verizon bill and it will show you the date and time of data transfers. Ask verizon about that. Worst case, there are apps you can install that will tell how which applications are being the data hogs.
