Current timeshare tour issues in Cabo

Hacienda Encantada, Pueblo Bonito Sunset
There has been an issue with "boiler rooms" in Cabo lately. A boiler room works from a rented office or condo and sells air.

Air is what you receive when you give them $7-10,000 after the trade in of your unwanted timeshares. These companies take your trade in and then sometimes do not get rid of the contracts as promised and you only find out when you get billed for your next maintenance fee. Several such operations have been closed down recently by the Mexican government, but they reincarnate themselves a few weeks later. Profeco has not helped and is possibly ignoring the problem.

OPCs typically route greedy tourists to these boiler rooms as they often pay $400-500 in cash gifts vs. legitimate resorts that have gift budgets that are typically half of that.

Boiler rooms sometimes run out of cash and leave you waiting for hours to collect. I know of invitees who didn't purchase and were DQd afterwards and not gifted. Some invitees have even taken the salesperson's digital tablet hostage to get their promised gifts. Some boiler rooms have rerouted invitees to other resorts if they appear to be too savy.

Bottom line is if you think you have negotiated a smoking deal with an OPC, you may be dealing your way to a boiler room set up; legitimate resorts can't give that kind of cash as they have expensive buildings to build. It's safer to stick to presentations that actually have units to sell because spending $10,000 to buy a bucket of air makes you a mope.

This discussion concerns offers in USD cash. I value activities, dining and resort credit at 50% compared to cash.

If it sounds too good to be true it is.
