That is what he sent me, let me know what you think.

LOL - I've been getting the same type of nonsense with my Craig's List ad.

Anyone know how the Craig's List scams work? What would they do if I responded with that type of information?

It is a scam - I get a dozen a week with the exact same wording....

From out of the woodwork...

Does it look a little odd to anyone else?

Scammers and spammers --- Craigslist seems to bring them all out....
Ironically (and fortunately, I suppose), the would-be scam is often immediately revealed by either badly bumbled English grammar or inappropriate statements or questions (...or often, both). For example, you list a week for sale at a specific resort for a specific price, but they ask about a rental and inquire about price and location of the facility. Hello???

The good news, however, is that such Craigslist scammers evidently just aren't too bright to begin with and very kindly seem to go out of their way to promptly and clearly reveal that fact...

I pulled my Ads off CraigsList, nothing but Scammers and Spammers:(

LOL - Just got this message a few minutes ago off of a Craig's List ad I posted. You feel kind of good getting the reply back, and then you get this crapola!!!

I have to disagree with you about CraigsList! Maybe you should slow down before taking your ad of the site.

Yes CL has many scammers as these days all the sites including the one's you pay.

CraigsList is a very good site and many people look everyday for items they want.

First you can read all these e-mails and if you marked the box when starting your ad all mail goes through CL and no one see's your address. This means you pick the people you deal with and forget the rest.

I have sold a car, a bedroom set, jacket and rented a timeshare over the last few years with no problems. (Knock on wood)

This is a good site if you use your head and only deal with people you feel good with like the fact they did read your ad and understand what pricing and location and all other factors involved.

What is funny in a sad way are the people that sign on and have all e-mail go to CL then go stupid and still list their e-mail or phone number on the ad!:crash:

What you might try if you had alot of scammers is list in a different area on CL like your home area or resort area only. Many people will change their ad wording or list in different area's over a few days so not getting caught by CL and this can help find a buyer but also opens you up to many more scammers.

I too have bought and sold things on Craigslist. I sold a car and a TS. But you need to watch out for scammers. This one is very standard issue.

I've also bought and sold many items on Craig's List. Who can complain at all??? It's FREE. The concept is fantastic.

Think about what they are doing to the newspapers... it's a wonder that anyone advertises in the classifieds anymore - way too expensive! And then you read about many of the papers that are about to go under. How much of that is due to Craigs List??? I'm willing to bet they've had an impact.

Just curious - can anyone out there hook Larry up???

Watchout!

Same idiot contacted me when I tried to rent my weeks. There are 3-4 at least.

that is exactly what the first email I got back from the ad I posted said. The Larry man is a moron scammer!

No Complaints Here About Craig's List.

The conventional newspapers are drowning in red ink while Craig's List is eating their lunch -- & making tons of money.

What has them tearing their hair over at the conventional newspapers is that Craig's List is (mostly) free.

Marshall McLuhan nailed it more than a generation ago.

In addition to coming up with The Medium Is The Massage & Hot Media & Cool Media & Global Village, etc., McLuhan also wrote (in Understanding Media, I believe) that conventional newspapers would remain viable until some replacement came along for classified advertising. Well, that's precisely what Craig's List is, no doubt about it.

Besides being el freebo while newspaper classified ads are mostly expensive, Craig's List is immediate while papers make you wait a day or 2. Craig's List allows free color photos, which are prohibitively costly in the papers. Craig's List ads can be deleted immediately, while newspaper ads may or may not disappear when you're done with them -- that is, even after you cancel an ad, yesterday's paper containing the ad may still be floating around & generating needless phone calls.

Craig's List scams & swindles are a fact of life. The folks in charge of Craig's List are aware of that & attempt to deal with it mainly via user education rather than by trying to police Craig's List worldwide, which would be like trying to herd cats only more so.

Anybody got anything like this:

Hello,
My name is Daniel Anguilar,I will like to know if my wife and i can spend 3 nights at your place. We will like to know if you have June 10 to 13 available.I will like you to get back to me with the cost and availability.

Thanks

A couple tips.

1) Have a craigslist-only email account. I have a gmail account that gets used for craigslist. Don't use your "main" account because it WILL get clogged with spam -- buying, selling, doesn't matter. (Too bad the scammers don't put their persistence into something productive. The world would be a better place.)

2) Set your reply-to email address on Craigslist to ANOTHER email account. One that you never look at (except to validate your craigslist account initially).

3) In your ad, include the following:

I will sell to US (and Canadian, if you're so inclined) residents ONLY, preferably LOCAL. Attention scammers, I have seen it all. I will not accept your counterfeit money orders and send you the balance. I will not use Western Union for the transaction. I accept cash. Only cash. And only twenty-dollar bills. If you can't pay in twenty dollar bills, you're not legit.

Attention Craiglist flakes. I have seen it all from you, too. Do not email me asking if the item is still available. If you're reading this ad, it is still available. I will delete this listing the minute it sells. I will not hold this item for you. The first person at my door with a sufficient amount of twenty-dollar bills gets the item. I will not store the item for you. It's cash and carry only. Do not arrive at my door with less money and then try to haggle. I will shut the door in your face.

If you want this item, you may reach me by email only. The address is (no spaces): myemail (at) somecompany dot com

PS -- I'm not really a grouch. It's just that I sell a lot of things on CL, and I get the same malarkey every time.

That will take care of 90 percent of your problems. Just act like you're selling stuff to five-year olds (edit: DEVIOUS five-year olds), and write your ad accordingly.

One reason I like gmail (google email) is that you can set up POP3 forwarding. Makes it easier to check this extra account... because I can have all messages forwarded to my main email account and turn it off if I don't have an ad running.

Yeah, I got Larry's and the couple who want the rental for 6/10-6/13

Right off, you could tell they were both scammers. The OP who started the thread will soon learn the difference between legitimate and scam. You get lots of practice if you have enough ongoing rentals listed.

It's a pain, yes. I probably get about 10-15 scammer emails for every legitimate email. But, like it's been said; IT'S FREE!!!!!!

I rented a week through CL this week. It's definitely helped me rent weeks, give away a week, sell a week and sell other non-timeshare related items. :D

I want to thank you all for providing me all these leads... much appreciated. Do you think they'll buy timeshares also? Keep 'em coming! :D

I have a couple questions about this, addressed to posters here in general, as well as to Scoop.

I use the Craigslist forwarding service that anonymizes my email address. Do you think there's an advantage to using a "real" email address instead? Will more people reply if I post an email address, instead of having the reply address be something like "anon6547456543@craigslist"?.

I received 12 scam/spam emails from my Craigslist ads today, which is getting to be a real hassle. Does putting in a warning to spammers/scammers cut down on those emails, do you think? I've been considering putting a notice at the end of the ad asking potential renters to write "Not Spam" or something similar in their subject lines!
